Morning Sports – 2/28/12

Columbus Blue Jackets General Manager Scott Howson announced yesterday that captain Rick Nash came to the organization and asked for a trade. However, the Jackets could not find a deal that worked and Nash stayed with Columbus. Columbus did pull the trigger on a trade that sends Samuel Pahlsson to Vancouver for two fourth round draft picks in the upcoming draft and defenseman Taylor Ellington. Ellington is in the AHL. The Jackets return to action tonight as they host the Detroit Red Wings. Columbus trails the season series with Detroit 2-1, but did win the last time the two met at Nationwide Arena. The game can be heard on 970 WATH and 97.1 FM tonight with pregame at 6:45 and drop of the puck at 7.

Elsewhere in NHL action last night, Colorado handled Anaheim, 4-1. Edmonton outlasted Winnipeg, 5-3. Nashville edged Los Angeles, 2-1 and the New York Rangers shutout New Jersey, 2-0.

The Cincinnati Reds made a contract extension official yesterday for left-hander Sean Marshall. The deal is worth $16.5 million dollars over three years. The deal also offers incentives for either starting or closing. He was originally only signed through this season for $3.1 million dollars and was acquired in a trade last year.

Ohio Bobcat guard Walter Offutt was named MAC East Player of the Week yesterday. This is Offutt’s first Player of the Week award. The junior tallied 23 points on five treys against Buffalo and put in 14 points against Akron on Sunday to go along with 5 rebounds. The Bobcats return to action tomorrow at Kent State. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pregame at 6:30 and tip off at 7.

The Ohio Women’s team picked up a Player of the Week honor as well as Tenishia Benson took home her second of the month. The senior scored 37 points combined this week, including helping Ohio to an upset win over Bowling Green. Benson also pulled down nine rebounds in each of the contests last week. The Lady ‘Cats hit the floor tomorrow to finish up their regular season at Miami at 7.

In the AP Top 25, #4 Kansas handled Oklahoma State, 70-58. #10 Baylor dominated Texas Tech, 77-48 and #12 Georgetown toppled #19 Notre Dame, 59-41.
