Morning Sports – 3/1/12

The Athens Bulldogs fell to Circleville, 51-45 in last night’s Division II District Semifinal at the Convocation Center. The Bulldogs came flying out to a 9-0 lead and led by eight midway through the second quarter. However, the Tigers would catch fire, going on an 11-2 to finish the half and lead by one. The Bulldogs struggled in the second half as nothing would fall from deep and Circleville pushed their lead out to 12. But Nick Stanley would single-handedly bring the Bulldogs back to down by just four after a couple of steals and baskets. But, it would not be enough as the Bulldogs finish the season at 12-10. Circleville advances to play Chillicothe in the District Final next Friday.

The Trimble Tomcats lost to top seeded Southern yesterday, 59-31 in the Divison IV Sectional Final at Meigs High School. The Tornadoes ran to an 11-2 start and never looked back as they held the Tomcats to just 10 first half points. The Southern defense forced 31 turnovers as Andrew Roseberry led the offense with 15 points. Southern is now 18-3 and will take on Manchester at the Convo on Tuesday. Trimble finishes the season at 3-19.

The Ohio Bobcats struggled in the first half and fell on the road to Kent State last night, 68-61. Ohio’s sloppy play in the first half put them down by 14 at the half. However, D.J. Cooper would catch fire in the second half, scoring 23 points on the night and helping bring Ohio to within three with a minute remaining. However, the Cats would fall just short on the road. The loss is important because now with a Buffalo win over BGSU on Saturday Ohio will be the #3 seed in the MAC Tournament on only get a bye to the quarterfinal. The ‘Cats will have to take care of business on the road at Miami tomorrow evening. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pregame at 6:30 and tip off at 7.

Elsewhere in MAC action last night, Bowling Green outlasted Miami, 56-51. Buffalo upset Akron, 74-70. Ball State toppled Central Michigan, 71-52. Eastern Michigan edged Western Michigan, 54-53 and Northern Illinois topped Toledo, 65-61.

The Columbus Blue Jackets return to the ice tonight as they travel to red-hot Colorado. The Avalanche have won four straight and won the first two games of the series with Columbus. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pregame at 8:45 and drop of the puck at 9.

The Ohio State Buckeyes snuck by Northwestern last night, 75-73. The game was knotted up at 73 with seconds left and Jared Sullinger delivered on a banked in turnaround shot with 3.1 seconds to go to give the Buckeyes a big road win. Sullinger led the Buckeyes with 22 points as OSU dominated the boards, 42-16. Ohio State will finish the regular season on Sunday at #5 Michigan State.

The Cleveland Cavaliers collapsed in the second half as they fell to New York, 120-103. The Cavs led by as many as 19 points, but the Knicks outscored Cleveland by 29 in the second half. Jeremy Lin tallied 19 points as well as 12 assists to help the Knicks to victory. Cleveland will look to snap their losing streak on Friday when they host the Bulls at 7:30.
