Morning Sports – 9/26/12

The Cincinnati Reds bested the Milwaukee Brewers last night, 4-2. The Reds got on the scoreboard first behind a Dioner Navarro two-run single in the second. The Brewers would cut the lead in the fifth on Jean Segura RBI single, but Cincinnati answered behind RBI doubles from Joey Votto and Jay Bruce. Johnny Cueto picked up his 19th win of the season, throwing seven innings and giving up two runs with five strikeouts. The Reds are now 93-61 and will continue the series with Milwaukee tonight. Bronson Arroyo will face off against Shaun Marcum. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pregame at 6:40 and first pitch at 7:10.

In other Reds news, it was announced that Redleg manager Dusty Baker suffered a mini-stroke last Friday, but is expected to make a full recovery. The Cincinnati manager is possible to return for the St. Louis series that begins on Monday. Baker was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, or an irregular heartbeat last Wednesday.

The Cleveland Indians edged the Chicago White Sox, 4-3 yesterday. Russ Canzler gave the Tribe the early lead in the second with a solo homer. Then, in the fourth, the Indians put up three runs behind Ezequiel Carrera and Asdrubal Cabrera RBI singles. Chicago cut into the lead in the fifth as A.J. Pierzynski and Dayan Viciedo hit back-to-back solo homers. The White Sox would cut the lead to one in the ninth on a Paul Konerko solo blast, but would fall just short. Cleveland wraps up the series with Chicago today at 8.

Elsewhere in the MLB, Minnesota clipped the New York Yankees, 5-4. St. Louis blanked Houston, 4-0. Oakland clipped Texas, 3-2 in 10 innings. Tampa Bay bested Boston, 5-2. Pittsburgh toppled the New York Mets, 10-6. Atlanta ousted Miami, 4-3. Philadelphia defeated Washington, 6-3. Toronto blanked Baltimore, 4-0 and Detroit shutout Kansas City, 2-0.

The OHSAA released its high school football computer rankings after five weeks yesterday. The Athens Bulldogs currently are tied for third in division three, region 12. In Division five, region 19, Federal Hocking is 11th, Alexander is at 15th and Nelsonville-York is at 17th. Also in Athens County, Trimble is sixth in division six, region 23. The top eight teams at the end of the season make the playoffs, with the top four hosting first round games. On Friday night, the Power 105 Athens County Game of the Week is Federal Hocking and South Gallia at 7:30 and on 970 WATH it’s Athens and Wellston at 7:30.
