The Athens Bulldogs showed their might once again on Friday night as they took down the Wellston Rockets 54-8 in front of an excited crowd at Basil Rutter Field. Wellston drove into Athens territory on the first drive, but fumbled and Athens took over to drive down the field, eventually scoring on a Joey Burrow to Adam Leurhman 25-yard touchdown pass. It was all Bulldogs from that point on.
Joey Burrow had a tremendous game, throwing for six touchdowns as he lead the Bulldogs to a 41-0 halftime lead.
Athens was rolling on all cylinders offensively and defensively, led by Tanner Wood with 9 tackles.
Their no-huddle spread offense was too fast for the Rockets to catch up to as the Bulldogs would hurry up to the line and continually catch Wellston off guard.
When they decided to run the ball, the Bulldogs continued to stay effective as Trae Williams ran for 115 yards and one touchdown on 14 carries.
With the win, Athens improves to 5-1 (1-0) as they start conference play with a victory. The Bulldogswill head to Alexander next week to take on the Spartans on 970 WATH.
