Morning Sports – 10/16/12

The Cincinnati Reds agreed to a two-year contract extension with manager Dusty Baker yesterday. General manager Walt Jocketty expects to sign the entire staff to a two-year deal and Baker believes the team will continue to improve and go further in the future. The contract is expected to be worth $3 million dollars a year. The Reds have won two division titles in three years under Baker, but have never advanced past the first round of the playoffs. The 63-year old head coach has the second most wins of all active managers.

Ohio place kicker Matt Weller was named MAC East Special Teams Player of the Week yesterday for the third time this season and the eighth of his career. Weller hit field goals from 44 and 29 yards out in Saturday’s win and moved into fourth place All-Time on the MAC scoring list. The Bobcats are on the bye this week before heading to Miami next week. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pregame coverage starting at 2 with the Bobcat Insider and kickoff at 3:30.

On Monday Night football last night, Denver came back to beat San Diego, 35-24 as Phillip Rivers threw four interceptions.

In other NFL news, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis will miss the remainder of the season with a torn right tricep. Lewis injured his arm in the Ravens 31-29 win over Dallas. Lewis had 57 tackles and one sack this season. The Ravens also lost cornerback Lardarius Webb for the year after he tore his left ACL on Sunday. Webb missed most of 2008 with a torn right ACL.

In MLB playoff action last night, San Francisco handled St. Louis, 7-1 to tie the NLDS up at two. Detroit battles New York for game three of the ALCS tonight at 8.

The Cleveland Cavaliers edged the Orlando Magic in preseason action yesterday, 114-111 in overtime. Kyrie Irving led the Cavs with 22 points and three assists, while C.J. Miles chipped in with 17 points and Anderson Varejao led the team with 8 rebounds. Cleveland will continue preseason play in Philadelphia on Wednesday at 7.
