Morning Sports – 10/19/12

College Sports Madness named Ohio guard D.J. Cooper the preseason MAC Player of the Year and Jim Christian the preseason head coach of the year yesterday. The publication also recognized Walter Offutt to the second team All-MAC preseason and Ivo Baltic was named to the third team. Ohio has their first exhibition game on November 3rd against Mercyhurst before the regular season opens against Portland on November 10th. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pregame at 1:30 and tipoff at 2.

Ohio State is now looking for a new opponent to open the 2013 football season after Vanderbilt sent a letter to the Buckeyes on Tuesday, backing out of the game scheduled for August 31st of next year. Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith is looking for a replacement game, but says that it will likely not be a BCS team, with a short period of time before the game. The agreement for the game was signed in 2010 and would have had the Buckeyes pay Vanderbilt $1.2 million for a one time trip to Columbus, but now Ohio State may have to pay more for a lower level team. Vanderbilt will not have to pay a penalty for backing out because it was just a single game.

The Athens County Game of the Week returns to Power 105 tonight as the Eastern Eagles visit Stewart to battle the Federal Hocking Lancers. The Eagles are 5-3, while the Lancers are 6-2 and the game is a must win for both sides if they expect to make the playoffs. Eastern is led by quarterback Joey Scowden, but Federal Hocking is very balanced offensively behind quarterback Kyle Jackson and running back Delbert Crum. The Lancers and Eagles meet in a TVC-Hocking clash tonight. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pregame at 7:15 and kickoff at 7:30.

The Athens Bulldogs get closer to week 10 tonight as they travel to Meigs. The Bulldogs have dominated offensively all season long, but since week two, Athens has not allowed more than 14 points behind linebacker Tanner Wood and a solid defensive line. Meigs is a young and upcoming team led by senior running back Dillon Boyer. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pregame at 7:15 and kickoff at 7:30.

Elsewhere in Athens County, Alexander travels to Wellston. Nelsonville-York heads to Meigs and Trimble visits Southern.

In NFL play last night, San Francisco topped Seattle, 13-6.

In MLB playoff action yesterday, Detroit blasted New York, 8-1 to sweep the Yankees and advance to the World Series and St. Louis handled San Francisco, 8-3 to take a 3-1 series lead in the NLCS.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman received three counterproposals from the players’ union yesterday, but left “thoroughly disappointed.” According to Bettman, Thursday’s talks were actually a “step backward.” The league had offered a 50-50 split in hockey related revenue earlier this week. No new talks are scheduled between the sides and the likelihood of a full 82-game schedule is getting smaller.

On your radio dial tonight, it’s the Sports Fan presented by J&K Contracting. That’s on 970 WATH and it’s from 6:06 to 7.
