Morning Sports – 10/26/12

The Athens Bulldogs and Nelsonville-York Buckeyes clash tonight in a battle for the TVC-Ohio crown and Doc Kroner trophy tonight at Boston field. Athens is the defending league champs and the Bulldogs have won eight in a row behind a dominant offense led by quarterback Joey Burrow, who has thrown for 35 touchdowns. However, the Buckeyes may present the best defense Athens has faced all season long, led up front by Neil Polley and D.J. Young. Nelsonville-York is also looking for a little revenge from last year’s overtime loss to Athens. The Dogs and the Bucks meet tonight on 970 WATH and 97.1 FM with pregame at 6:06 with a special edition of the Sports Fan presented by J&K Contracting and kickoff at 7:30.

The Athens County Game of the Week returns to Power 105 tonight as Federal Hocking heads to Trimble. The Lancers are coming off of a close loss to Eastern and hold a slim hope of making the playoffs. However, the Lancers are more worried about bragging rights in this Athens County rivalry as Trimble has not lost since week 2 and the Tomcats have pitched six straight shutouts. The Tomcats meet the Lancers tonight on Power 105 with pregame at 7:15 and kickoff at 7:30.

Elsewhere in Athens County tonight, Alexander hosts Meigs.

NBA commissioner David Stern announced yesterday that he will step down as commissioner on February 1st, 2014. The date will mark the 30-year anniversary of him taking the job. The 70-year old will remain in charge of the league for the next 15 months. The owners said they will begin negotiating with deputy commissioner Adam Silver to take over for Stern, a decision they made unanimously. The NBA season tips off on Tuesday.

In NFL action last night, Tampa Bay handled Minnesota, 36-17.

The San Francisco Giants blanked the Detroit Tigers, 2-0 to take a 2-0 series lead in the World Series last night.  The game was a pitchers duel through six innings as Detroit hurler Doug Fister and Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner went at it, but San Francisco would strike first, scoring when Brandon Crawford hit into a double play in the seventh. Then in the eighth, Hunter Pence added an insurance run on an RBI double. Bumgarner was excellent, throwing seven innings and giving up just two hits with eight strikeouts. Game 3 of the series is Saturday night at 8.

The NHL plans to withdraw its latest proposal to the Players’ Association after Thursday’s deadline passed with no new deal in place. There have been no new talks in days since the counter proposals from the NHL Players Association. It is expected that the NHL will cancel all games in November on Friday. The All-Star Game, which is scheduled to be held in Columbus this year, is not expected to be a part of the announcement, but could be axed as early as next week.

Ohio women’s soccer fell 3-0 at Kent State yesterday, but still clinched a spot in the upcoming MAC Tournament. The Bobcats will take on Miami in the first round on Sunday at 1. The #24 Bobcats football team returns to action on Saturday as they take on rival Miami in the Battle of the Bricks. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pregame at 2 with the Bobcat Insider and kickoff at 3:30.
