Morning Sports – 11/22/12

The Cleveland Cavaliers bested the Philadelphia 76ers last night, 92-83. The Cavs jumped out to a big lead after the first quarter, on top 28-15. The Cavs never let Philadelphia get close enough to win the game as Cleveland was led by Jeremy Pargo with 28 points. Dion Waiters had 16 points as Cleveland shot 56 percent from deep, hitting 13 treys. The Cavs are now 3-8 on the season and will head to Orlando on Friday night at 7.

Elsewhere in the NBA, Charlotte edged Toronto, 98-97. Orlando handled Detroit, 90-74. San Antonio bested Boston, 112-100. Indiana outlasted New Orleans, 115-107 in overtime. Atlanta clipped Washington, 101-100 in overtime. Miami ousted Milwaukee, 113-106 in overtime. Houston snuck past Chicago, 93-89. Denver topped Minnesota, 101-94 and Oklahoma City outlasted the LA Clippers, 117-111.

In College Basketball’s AP Top 25 yesterday, #9 North Carolina dominated Chaminade in the Maui Invitational, 112-70. #8 Kentucky outlasted Morehead State, 81-70 and #6 Syracuse bested Princeton, 73-53.

Cleveland Browns safety T.J. Ward was fined $25,000 yesterday for his fourth quarter hit on Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Kevin Ogletree. The hit was ruled by the league to be an illegal hit to the head. Ward was fined $15,000 in 2010 for his hit on Bengals wideout Jordan Shipley. Ward will appeal the hit, noting that the hit occurred to the chest before incidental contact with the facemask. Cleveland battles rival Pittsburgh on Sunday at 1.

The NHL Players offered the league a new proposal on Wednesday that the union said left the two sides less then $40 million apart over a five-year contract. NHL Comissioner Gary Bettman immediately rejected the offer, noting that the two sides were still “far apart”. Today is the 68th day of the lockout that has seen more than a quarter of the regular season cancelled. The two sides will now take a break for the holiday, and more cancellations could be on the horizon.

Today’s Thanksgiving NFL schedule features Houston at Detroit at 12:30, Washington at Dallas at 4:15 and New England at the New York Jets at 8:20. The Cincinnati Bengals are in action on Sunday on 970 WATH and 97.1 FM. Pre game starts at 11:30 AM and kickoff against the Raiders is at 1.
