The Athens Bulldogs topped New Lexington last night in our Athens County Game of the week, 60-52. Athens jumped out to an early 8-0 lead, but the Panthers answered back by taking the lead midway through the second. Sawyer Summers gave Athens the lead back at the half with 8 quick points before the intermission. Athens would pull away in the fourth quarter for their fourth win on the season. Zacchia Saltzman tallied 20 points for the Bulldogs and Jared Elmore added 12. Athens will now head to Meigs on Friday night at 7:30.
Elsewhere in area boys basketball, Miller upset Belpre, 67-58. Federal Hocking bested Southern, 55-46 for coach Howie Caldwell’s 400th career-win behind Max Carney’s 19 points and 11 rebounds. Trimble fell to South Gallia, 45-42 and Vinton County bested River Valley, 54-48. In Area girls basketball last night, Athens fell to Circleville, 51-50 and Trimble defeated Miller, 55-34.
The 7th ranked Ohio State Buckeyes outlasted Winthrop, 65-55 last night. The Buckeyes led by just one at the half, but pulled away in the second half behind Deshaun Thomas’ 21 points and 9 rebounds. Lenzelle Smith also poured in 14 for Ohio State, who will now host #9 Kansas on Saturday at 4.
The Ohio Bobcats return to action tonight as they head to UMass. The Bobcats have struggled of late, having lost three of their last four and will look to turn things around on the road against a tough Minutemen squad out of the Atlantic 10. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game at 7 and tip off at 7:30.
In NCAA basketball’s Top 25 last night, #4 Arizona topped Oral Roberts, 89-64. #9 Kansas bested Richmond, 87-59. #18 San Diego State basted Point Loma 76-49. #20 Michigan State outlasted Bowling Green, 64-53 and #25 NC State ousted Stanford, 88-79.
The Cleveland Cavaliers fell to the Toronto Raptors last night, 113-99. The Cavs led by four at the half, but Toronto would outscore Cleveland by six in the third and 12 in the fourth as the Cavs surrendered 35 points in the final frame. Cleveland was led by Kyrie Irving with 23 points and 7 assists as well as Anderson Varejao with 22 points and 10 rebounds. The Cavs will now head to Boston tonight at 7:30.
Elsewhere in the NBA last night, Atlanta outlasted Washington, 100-95 in overtime. Utah edged Brooklyn, 92-90. Miami bested Minnesota, 103-92. Chicago topped Boston, 100-89. Milwaukee ousted Indiana, 98-93. Dallas handled Philadelphia, 107-100. Denver got past San Antonio, 112-106. The LA Lakers snuck past Charlotte, 101-100 and Golden State blew past New Orleans, 103-96.
