Morning Sports – 12/21/12

In area girls high school basketball last night, Athens bested Vinton County, 53-36. Dominique Doseck led the way for the Bulldogs with 21 points. Nelsonville-York toppled Meigs, 59-36. Shelby True led the Buckeyes with 12 points on the night. Alexander fell to Wellston, 61-49. Eastern handled Trimble, 66-19. Waterford ousted South Gallia, 54-32. Belpre blew past Wahama, 66-21 and Miller edged Southern, 67-66.

In TVC boys basketball tonight, Athens heads to Meigs. Alexander welcomes Vinton County. Nelsonville-York visits Wellston. Eastern hosts South Gallia. Federal Hocking welcomes Wahama. Waterford travels to Miller and Southern is at Belpre.

Ohio basketball returns to action tomorrow afternoon as they welcome winless Maryland Eastern Shore to the Convocation center. The Bobcats have struggled of late, having lost four of their last five and will look to get back on track. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game at 1:30 and tip off at 2.

In MLB news yesterday, free agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Texas Rangers. The 36-year old veteran backstop hit .278 with 27 homers and 77 RBIs last season for the Chicago White Sox.

The NHL has decided to cancel more games, this time all games through January 14th as negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement continue to sputter. There is speculation that there may be a mid-January deadline set by the league to get a new CBA done or the entire season will be canceled. In total, 625 regular season games, or just over 50% of the schedule has been canceled. The two sides have not met face to face since December 13th when talks with a federal mediator fell apart. The Players continue to say they are ready to meet with the league, but the league has demanded the conditions be right.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green was the leading vote getter among all wide outs for the Pro Bowl. Green is seventh among all players as the sophomore wide out has 85 catches for 1208 yards and 11 touchdowns so far this season. Defensive Lineman Geno Atkins finished second at the defensive tackle position. The Bengals return to action on Sunday as they head to Pittsburgh for a crucial AFC North matchup. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 11:30 AM and kick off at 1.

In NBA play last night, Portland bested Denver, 101-93. Miami handled Dallas, 110-95 and Minnesota knocked off Oklahoma City, 99-93.

In the Poinsettia Bowl last night, BYU toppled San Diego State, 23-6.
