Ohio basketball senior guard D.J. Cooper was named MAC East Basketball player of the week yesterday. Cooper averaged 16 points and 12 assists per game in a loss to UMass and win over Maryland Eastern Shore. Cooper became the MAC’s all-time career assists leader last Wednesday as well. Ohio basketball returns to action on Saturday evening as they head to Oklahoma. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game at 7:30 and tip off at 8. Ohio football is in the Independence Bowl on Friday afternoon against Louisiana Monroe. The Cincinnati Bengals learned that wide receiver A.J. Green and defensive tackle Geno Atkins were named starters in the NFL Pro Bowl Game in Hawaii. It will be the second trip to the Pro Bowl for both Atkins and Green. The Bengals will also send tight end Jermaine Greshman to the Pro Bowl as the first alternate will take the place of Steelers injured tight end Heath Miller. The Bengals other first alternate is left tackle Andrew Whitworth. Quarterback Andy Dalton and cornerback Leon Hall were both named third alternates. The Cleveland Browns will send kicker Phil Dawson and offensive lineman Joe Thomas to the Pro Bowl as starters. For the 14-year veteran kicker Dawson, it is his first trip to the game and it will be the sixth consecutive appearance for Thomas. Browns kick returner Josh Cribbs, center Alex Mack and linebacker D’Qwell Jackson were named first team alternates. The Cincinnati Bengals finish the regular season on Sunday against Baltimore. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 11:30 AM and kickoff at 1.
The Cleveland Cavaliers topped the Washington Wizards last night, 87-84. The Cavs and Wizards were knotted up after three quarters of play, but the Cavs took the advantage in the fourth behind 26 points and eight assists from guard Kyrie Irving. Cleveland outscored the Wizards in the final period, 19-16. The Cavs will now host Atlanta on Friday night at 7:30.
Elsewhere in NBA action yesterday, San Antonio toppled Toronto, 100-80. Houston edged Minnesota, 87-84. Philadelphia defeated Memphis, 99-89. Milwaukee handled Brooklyn, 108-93. Atlanta outlasted Detroit, 126-119 in two overtimes. New Orleans clipped Orlando, 97-94. Miami blew past Charlotte, 105-92. Golden State bested Utah, 94-83. New York snuck past Phoenix, 99-97 and Denver topped the LA Lakers, 126-114.
In college football’s Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl last night, Central Michigan snuck past Western Kentucky, 24-21.
In MLB news, the Boston Red Sox acquired closer Joel Hanrahan from the Pittsburgh Pirates as a part of a six-team deal. The Pirates in return will receive star prospect Jerry Sands from the Red Sox.
