The Athens County game of the week returns to Power 105 tonight as Athens travels to Jackson for a Southeastern Ohio rivalry game. The Bulldogs have picked up steam, starting the season at 4-1 and Athens has yet to lose on the road. The Ironmen have struggled in the early goings of the season, but will look to turn it around on their home floor against the Bulldogs. The game can be heard on Power 105 and 970 WATH with pre game at 7:15 and tip off at 7:30.
Elsewhere area basketball action tonight, Nelsonville-York hosts Miller. Meigs is at Southern. Belpre travels to River Valley and Waterford is at Frontier.
In area girls basketball last night, Athens blew past Oak Hill, 60-41. Vinton County fell to Adena, 46-27. Morgan handled Trimble, 63-21. Alexander clipped River Valley, 54-49 and Gallia Academy toppled Meigs, 56-41.
Ohio football caps off the 2012 season today in the Advocare v100 Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana against the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks. The Bobcats struggled to finish the season, losing four of their last five. However, Ohio will look to win their second bowl in a row against the stellar offense of the Warhawks out of the Sun Belt. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game coverage starting at 12:30 with the Bobcat Insider and tip off at 2.
In NCAA football bowl game action yesterday, #24 San Jose State topped Bowling Green, 29-20 in the Military Bowl and in the Belk Bowl, Cincinnati outlasted Duke, 48-34.
Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Geno Atkins was named AFC Defensive Player of the week yesterday. Atkins has had a very good week, having also been named to the Pro Bowl. The lineman tallied two sacks with eight tackles and a forced fumble against Pittsburgh on Sunday. Cincinnati wraps up the regular season on Sunday against Baltimore. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 11:30 AM and kick off at 1.
In NBA news, the Brooklyn Nets have fired head coach Avery Johnson. The Nets won 11 of their first 15 games this season and Johnson was named the Eastern Conference coach of the month in November. However, New Jersey has gone just 3-10 in the month of December and sit at eighth in the Eastern conference playoff standings. Assistant PJ. Carlisemo will be the interim coach and reports are already surfacing that the Nets could target former Lakers head coach Phil Jackson.
