Morning Sports – 1/2/12

The Cleveland Browns top choice for their next head coach is reportedly Oregon head coach Chip Kelly. Kelly is 45-7 in four years at Oregon. The Browns and Eagles are both interested in the up tempo style of Kelly and the Browns are reportedly also very interested in Penn State head coach Bill O’Brien.

In other NFL head coaching news, former Eagles coach Andy Reid is now one of the top candidates for the Arizona head coaching position.

The Cleveland Indians signed veteran pitcher Brett Myers yesterday. Myers will reportedly be used as a starter for the Tribe after coming out of the bullpen for Houston and the Chicago White Sox last season. Myers posted 3.52 ERA and tallied 19 saves for Houston before going to the White Sox where he put up a 3.12 ERA in 35 appearances. The deal is reportedly for one year.

The NHL and the Players association made some considerable progress on Tuesday as the two sides worked all day and the league provided the union a response offer to one previously made by the union. Union leader Donald Fehr said that the players will get back to the league on Wednesday with time running out. There is speculation that if a deal is not reached by mid-January, the season will be cancelled.

In New Year’s Day college football bowl action yesterday, #7 Georgia ousted #16 Nebraska, 45-31 in the Capitol One Bowl. #6 Stanford outlasted Wisconsin, 20-14 in the Rose Bowl. Oklahoma State dominated Purdue, 58-14 in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. #10 South Carolina edged #18 Michigan, 33-28. #20 Northwestern won their first bowl since 1949, defeating Mississippi State, 34-20 in the Gator Bowl and #12 Florida State handled #15 Northern Illinois in the Orange Bowl, 31-10. Tonight, #21 Louisville takes on #3 Florida in the Sugar Bowl at 8:30.

In NBA play yesterday, Denver topped the LA Clippers, 92-78. Atlanta bested New Orleans, 95-86. Detroit defeated Sacramento, 103-97. Portland clipped New York, 105-100. Dallas ousted Washington, 103-94 and Philadelphia snuck past the LA Lakers, 103-99.
