The Athens Bulldogs fell to the Warren Warriors last night, 60-57. The Bulldogs took the early lead after one and led by six at the half. However, Warren came storming back to take the lead in the third behind junior forward Evan French’s 21 points. The game went back and forth and came down to the wire, but a controversial drive and basket by Michael Hall clinched the victory for Warren. Athens was led in scoring by sophomore Joey Burrow with 26 points. The Bulldogs fall to 7-2 on the season and will travel to Alexander on Friday night. The game can be heard on Power 105 and 970 WATH with pre game at 7:20 and tip off at 7:35.
The Federal Hocking Lancers outlasted Alexander last night, 54-46. The Lancers and Spartans were neck and neck after one, but Federal Hocking would start to pull away just before half leading by six. Alexander would cut into the Lancer lead behind some big baskets by Mason Chapman and trailed by three with a minute to play. However, Max Carney and the Lancers would prove too much. Federal Hocking was led by Max Carney with 25 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks. The Lancers will now host South Gallia on Friday night.
In other area boys basketball action, Vinton County topped Wellston, 74-65. Eastern defeated Waterford, 67-58. Circleville handled Logan Elm, 49-36. Ironton blew past Gallia Academy, 65-36. Chesapeake toppled River Valley, 51-36. Belpre edged South Gallia, 49-45. Trimble clipped Wahama, 62-59 and Southern bested Miller, 72-62.
The final NCAA football AP Top 25 was released yesterday, with Ohio State finishing third overall. Alabama came in at number one, while Oregon moved to second. Notre Dame finished fourth and Georgia and Alabama finished tied for fifth.
Ohio State basketball topped Purdue last night, 74-64. The Buckeyes led by 10 after one half, but let Purdue climb back into the ball game in the second half. However, Deshaun Thomas proved to be too much for the Boilermakers with 22 points and 7 rebounds. Aaron Craft chipped in 15 points for the Buckeyes, who move to 12-3 on the season and host #2 Michigan on Sunday at 1:30.
The Ohio Bobcats return to action tonight as they welcome the Buffalo Bulls for the MAC opener. The Bobcats are coming off a big win over Marshall on Saturday and are looking to start strong in MAC play. Ohio and Buffalo can be heard on Power 105 with pre game coverage beginning at 6:06 with the Bobcat Insider and tip off at 7.
In NBA play last night, Brooklyn dominated Philadelphia, 109-89. Indiana topped Miami, 87-77. Milwaukee bested Phoeniz, 108-99. Houston toppled the LA Lakers, 125-112 and Minnesota ousted Atlanta, 108-103.
