Morning Sports – 1/18/13

The Athens Bulldogs return to the hardwood tonight as they welcome Vinton County for a titanic TVC-Ohio clash. The Vikings have won the past two TVC-Ohio titles, but the Bulldogs sit in second in the Ohio, looking to dethrone Vinton County. The Bulldogs and Vikings both sit at 10-2 on the season. Athens is lead by a core of youth headlined by sophomore Joey Burrow and freshman Ibi Watson. On the other end, Vinton County brings a ton of experience led by senior Jordan Kidd. The game can be heard on 970 WATH and 97.1 FM with pre game at 7:20 and tip off at 7:35.

The Athens County Game of the Week returns to Power 105 tonight as Alexander heads to Nelsonville-York for an Athens county rivalry matchup. The Buckeyes are coming off a dominating win over River Valley and will look to snap a two-game conference losing streak. The scrappy Spartans are looking for their first win in league play and want to avenge a loss at the Alley to the Bucks early in the season. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game at 7:20 and tip off at 7:35.

Elsewhere in area boys hoops tonight, Federal Hocking hosts Miller. Wellston heads to Meigs. Eastern travels to Trimble. Southern is at Wahama and South Gallia welcomes Waterford.

In area girls action last night, Athens outlasted Wellston in overtime, 52-49. Dominique Doseck led Athens with 20 points. Vinton County toppled Meigs, 51-23. Nelsonville-York bested Alexander, 47-41. Southern topped Federal Hocking, 55-47. Belpre clipped Miller, 60-55 and Eastern blew past South Gallia, 73-44.

The Columbus Blue Jackets hit the ice for the first time this year as they head to Nashville tomorrow night. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 7:45 and drop of the puck at 8.

The Ohio Lady Bobcats fell last night on the road at Miami, 78-56. The injury riddled Bobcats struggled early, trailing by 13 at the half. However, Ohio came storming back with an 8-2 run to start the second half that cut the deficit to seven. But Miami regained momentum and proved too much for the Lady Cats. Ohio was led by Kiyanna Black with a career-high 26 points. The Lady Cats will now host Bowling Green on Sunday at 2.

The Ohio Bobcats men return to action on Saturday, looking to stay perfect in conference play as they host the Toledo Rockets. The Bobcats have handled business at home, sitting at 11-1 in the Convo this year. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game starting at 5 with the Bobcat Insider and tip off at 6.

In NCAA men’s basketball’s Top 25 last night, #5 Michigan outlasted #9 Minnesota, 83-75. #10 Florida handled Texas A&M, 68-47. #3 Duke blew past Georgia Tech, 73-57. #8 Gonzaga blasted Portland, 71-49. #22 VCU ousted St. Joes, 92-86 in overtime and #23 Illinois fell to Northwestern, 68-54.
