The Athens County Game of the Week returns to Power 105 tonight as Federal Hocking travels to Eastern. The Lancers sit all alone atop the TVC-Hocking and are coming off of a pair of impressive wins last week over Miller and Belpre. The Eagles, however, have struggled this season and will look to get back on track with an upset. The game can be heard on Power 105 tonight with pre game at 7:15 and tip off at 7:30.
Elsewhere in area boys basketball tonight, Alexander hosts Miller. Jackson visits Meigs. Federal Hocking heads to Eastern. Trimble travels to Belpre. Vinton County welcomes Logan and South Gallia is at Southern.
The Columbus Blue Jackets fell to the Detroit Red Wings last night, 4-3 in a shootout. After a scoreless first period, the Red Wings took a 2-0 lead on goals from Brian Lashoff and Ian White. However, the Blue Jackets would respond to take the lead behind three unanswered goals from Cam Atkinson, James Wisniewski and Vinny Prospal. But the Red Wings would score in the final minutes of the game on a Pavel Datsyuk wrist shot goal to send it to overtime. After a scoreless overtime, the two sides would head to a fourth round of the shootout and Damien Brunner would score to give the Red Wings the win. Columbus falls to 1-1 and will now head to Phoenix on Wednesday night. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 9:45 and drop of the puck at 10.
Elsewhere in the NHL last night, Buffalo clipped Toronto, 2-1. St. Louis outlasted Nashville, 4-3 in a shootout. The New York Islanders ousted Tampa Bay, 4-3. Boston snuck past Winnipeg, 2-1 in a shootout and Ottawa blanked Florida, 4-0.
The 2015 MLB All-Star game will be held in Cincinnati. Commissioner Bud Selig is expected to be in Cincinnati on Wednesday to announce the game. It will be the first All-Star game at Great American Ballpark. The Reds last hosted in 1988 at Riverfront Stadium. This year’s game will be held at Citi Field in New York and in 2014 it will be held in Minnesota.
The Cleveland Cavaliers learned yesterday that forward Anderson Varejao will miss the remainder of the season with a blood clot in his right lung. The forward, who led the NBA in rebounding before getting injured with a bruised knee last month, underwent surgery on a torn leg muscle less than two weeks ago. This is the third straight season that Varejao will miss extensive time with injuries.
In NBA action yesterday, Indiana edged Memphis, 82-81. New Orleans bested Sacramento, 114-105. Houston topped Charlotte, 100-94. Atlanta defeated Minnesota, 104-96. Brooklyn ousted New York, 88-85. Golden State knocked off the LA Clippers, 106-99 and San Antonio defeated Philadelphia, 90-85.
Ohio State fell to 14th in the latest AP Top 25 after a loss at Michigan State over the weekend. The Buckeyes will return to action tonight as they host Iowa at 6:30.
