The Ohio Bobcats handled the Miami Redhawks in the Battle of the Bricks last night, 74-62. The Bobcats led for the majority of the first half and led by seven going into the intermission after a DJ Cooper put back beat the buzzer. The Bobcats would come storming out of the gates, pulling away behind a 19-3 run as Ohio torched the Redhawks from deep. The Cats hit 12 treys on the night and shot 52 percent from the field. Ohio was led by DJ Cooper with 17 points, 9 assists and 7 rebounds as well as Nick Kellogg with 15. Ohio forward Ivo Baltic tallied his 1000th point in the win. The Cats are 5-0 in MAC play for the first time since 1998-99. Ohio will now travel to Kent State on Saturday evening. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game at 5:30 and tip off at 6.
Elsewhere in MAC play last night, Akron stayed undefeated in conference with a 71-56 win over Toledo. Bowling Green handled Kent State, 70-55. Buffalo clipped Ball State, 66-63. Northern Illinois upset Central Michigan, 74-61 and Western Michigan outlasted Eastern Michigan, 63-59.
In NCAA basketball’s Top 25 yesterday, #25 Miami blasted #1 Duke, 90-63. #7 Indiana dominated Penn State, 72-49. LaSalle upset #9 Butler, 54-53. #20 Wichita State bested Missouri State, 62-52. #8 Florida blasted Georgia, 64-47. #15 New Mexico bested Colorado State, 66-61. Drake knocked off #17 Creighton, 74-69 and Northwestern topped #12 Minnesota, 55-48.
The Ohio Lady Bobcats fell for the fifth time in a row last night, 77-48 to Central Michigan. The Bobcats led early on, but a 15-2 run by the Chippewas would give them the 13-point lead at the break. The Bobcats would get as close as 11 points in the second half, but could not close the gap. The Lady Cats were led by Erin Bailes with 12 points and Kiyanna Black with 10. The Ohio women will now head to Ball State on Saturday at 2.
The Columbus Blue Jackets fell to Phoenix last night, 5-1. The Jackets got on the board first on a Fedor Tyutin slap shot goal in the second period. However, it was all Coyotes from that point on. Phoenix would net two goals at the end of the second from Steve Sullivan and Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Sullivan would tally two more to start the third for the hat trick and put the game away. Columbus will now head to Colorado tonight. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 8:45 and drop of the puck at 9.
In other NHL action last night, Toronto toppled Pittsburgh, 5-2 and the New York Rangers edged Boston, 4-3 in overtime.
In NBA play yesterday, Atlanta topped Charlotte, 104-92. Miami outlasted Toronto, 123-116 in overtime. Chicago edged Detroit, 85-82. Memphis toppled the LA Lakers, 106-93. Denver defeated Houston, 105-95. Brooklyn ousted Minnesota, 91-83. San Antonio snuck past New Orleans, 106-102 and Utah topped Washington, 92-88.
