The Columbus Blue Jackets fell last night to the St. Louis Blues, 4-1. The Blues came storming out of the gates, scoring three times in the first period, including their first goal just two minutes into the game. Columbus would answer late in the second period when Derrick Brassard tallied a wrist shot goal, but St. Louis would put the game out of reach in the final period with a late goal by David Backes. The Blue Jackets will now host Detroit on Saturday night. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 6:45 and drop of the puck at 7.
Elsewhere in the NHL last night, Florida toppled Winnipeg, 6-3. Pittsburgh blanked the New York Rangers, 3-0. The New York Islanders clipped New Jersey, 5-4 in overtime. Toronto edged Washington, 3-2 and Buffalo blew past Boston, 7-4.
The Athens County Game of the Week returns to Power 105 tonight as Wellston travels to Nelsonville-York for a TVC-Ohio clash. The Buckeyes bested Wellston in the first match up, but the Golden Rockets will enter Ben Wagner Gymnasium looking for some revenge. The Bucks and Rockets clash on Power 105 tonight with pre game at 7:15 and tip off at 7:30.
The Athens Bulldogs hit the hardwood tonight as they welcome TVC-Ohio rival Meigs to the Plains. The Bulldogs are rolling, having won six in a row and will look to stay atop the conference. However, the young, upset-minded Marauders will look for revenge for a loss to the Dogs just a couple of weeks ago. The game can be heard on 970 WATH and 97.1 FM tonight with pre game at 7:20 and tip off at 7:30.
Elsewhere in area boys action tonight, Alexander heads to Vinton County. Federal Hocking hosts Waterford. Trimble is at Southern. Wahama travels to Belpre and Eastern welcomes Miller.
In area girls hoops action last night, Athens clinched the TVC-Ohio championship with a 63-42 win over Vinton County. Wellston bested Alexander, 57-36. Federal Hocking topped Miller, 57-47. Belpre defeated Trimble, 66-44 and South Gallia blew past Southern, 53-23.
The Ohio Lady Bobcats fell for the seventh straight time in MAC play last night, 61-42 to the Toledo Rockets. The Bobcats struggled out of the gates, shooting just 28 percent from the field on the night and 22 percent from deep. The Rockets, jumped out to an 18-point lead at the break and never looked back. Ohio was led by Lexie Baldwin with 11 points. The Lady Cats will now host Kent State on Sunday at 2.
The Ohio Bobcats men’s squad returns to action on Saturday as they travel to Northeastern Ohio to take on rival Akron. The Bobcats and Zips are both undefeated in MAC play and will battle in a rematch of last year’s MAC title game. The game can be heard on Saturday on Power 105 with pre game at 4:30 and tip off at 5.
