The Athens County Game of the week returns to Power 105 and 970 WATH tonight as Athens hosts rival Nelsonville-York. The Bulldogs blew past the Buckeyes in the first matchup in Nelsonville and have been on a tear since, sitting atop the TVC-Ohio led by sophomore Joey Burrow. However, the deep Buckeyes are out for revenge in the Plains behind a six-game winning streak and seniors Marc Carter and Clint Handa. The game can be heard on Power 105 and 970 WATH tonight with pre game at 7:20 and tip off at 7:30.
In other area boys action tonight, Alexander travels to Wellston. Federal Hocking visits South Gallia. Trimble welcomes Waterford. Wahama is at Miller. Vinton County heads to Meigs and Eastern hosts Belpre.
In area girls action last night, Athens toppled Alexander, 65-42 to finish 10-0 in the TVC-Ohio. Vinton County bested Nelsonville-York, 58-47. Trimble edged Federal Hocking, 54-49. Eastern blew past Southern, 73-19. Waterford handled Belpre, 69-42 and South Gallia topped Miller, 62-36.
The Columbus Blue Jackets fell to the Calgary Flames last night, 4-3 in overtime. The Flames tallied a goal just four minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead, but seconds later Matt Calvert scored on a wrist shot to tie the game and Mark Letestu tallied a goal later in the first to give Columbus the lead. Calgary fought back to tie the game in the second and took the lead in the third. However, the Jackets once again rebounded when Vinny Prospal found the back of the net to tie the game and send it to overtime. But the excitement in Nationwide Arena was short-lived as Alex Tanguay scored a minute into overtime to give Calgary the win. The Jackets will return to action on Sunday as they host Edmonton. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 5:45 and drop of the puck at 6.
Elsewhere in the NHL, Vancouver handled Minnesota, 4-1. Nashville shutout Los Angeles, 3-0. Detroit dominated St. Louis, 5-1. Toronto clipped Winnipeg, 3-2. Carolina edged Ottawa, 3-2 in overtime. Pittsburgh blew past Washington, 5-2. Florida snuck past Philadelphia, 3-2 in a shootout. The New York Rangers blasted the New York Islanders, 4-1. New Jersey ousted Tampa Bay, 4-2 and Buffalo clipped Montreal, 5-4 in a shootout.
In NCAA men’s basketball Top 25 play last night, Illinois upset #1 Indiana on a buzzer beater layup, 74-72. #4 Duke outlasted NC State, 98-85 and Texas A&M knocked off #21 Missouri, 70-68.
The Ohio Bobcats are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host the Bowling Green Falcons. The Bobcats are 7-1 in the MAC and will look to continue their winning ways at home against a solid Falcons squad. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game starting at 1 with the Bobcat Insider and tip off at 2.
