Morning Sports – 2/19/13

The Athens County Game of the Week returns to Power 105 tonight as the Alexander Spartans start their playoff run in a sectional semifinal matchup with Crooksville. The Spartans received the ninth seed in the Division 3 Athens Sectional and with a win over the Ceramics, Alexander would advance to take on Nelsonville-York on Friday. But the Spartans have a tall task in front of them in a tough Ceramics squad. The game can be heard on Power 105 tonight with pre game at 7:45 and tip off at 8.

In area boys action last night, Nelsonville-York knocked off Vinton County, 64-60. The Buckeyes were led by Marc Carter with 24 points. The score meant that Athens and Vinton County are co-champs of the TVC-Ohio.

The Columbus Blue Jackets fell to the Anaheim Ducks last night, 3-2. The Jackets jumped on the board right away in the first period on a Vinny Prospal wrist shot goal. However, the Ducks would answer with a Peter Holland goal to tie the game and about 20 seconds later Anaheim would take the lead on a Ryan Getzlaf goal late in the first. The second period would hold both teams scoreless, but the Ducks would add some insurance with a Corey Perry goal midway through the third period. Columbus would cut the lead to one on a Derick Brassard power play goal, but it would not be enough. The Jackets will now head to Detroit on Thursday night. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 7:15 and drop of the puck at 7:30.

Elsewhere in the NHL, Toronto blanked Florida, 3-0. Colorado clipped Nashville, 6-5. Montreal shutout Carolina, 3-0. Philadelphia blasted the New York Islanders, 7-0. Ottawa clipped New Jersey, 2-1 in a shootout and Phoenix toppled Calgary, 4-0.

Some sad news yesterday, Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss passed away yesterday at the age of 80. Buss had been hospitalized for the past year and a half for cancer treatments, but the cause of death was kidney failure. Buss took over in 1979 and oversaw 10 Laker championships and helped lead the team to 16 NBA Finals. Since Buss took over the team, the Lakers have been the winningest franchise in the NBA.

In NCAA Top 25 play last night, #13 Kansas State handled West Virginia, 71-61 and #25 Notre Dame bested #20 Pitt, 51-42.

On your radio dial tonight, it’s the Sports Fan presented by J&K Contracting. That’s on 970 WATH and it’s from 6:06 to 7.
