Morning Sports – 2/22/13

The Athens County Game of the Week returns to Power 105 tonight as Nelsonville-York battles Crooksville in a Division 3 Sectional Final. The Road to the Convo begins tonight for the red-hot Buckeyes, who are coming off their biggest win of the season over Vinton County. However, Crooksville comes in looking revenge for an earlier loss to the Bucks behind powerful big man Mitchell Swingle. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game at 5:45 and tip off at 6.

The Athens Bulldogs start their Road to the Convo tonight as they take on Gallia Academy in a Division 2 Sectional Final. The Bulldogs are a favorite to win a district title and with a win tonight Athens will return to the Convo for the second straight year. However, the senior laden Blue Devils are looking to pull the upset in a rematch of a game that Athens took earlier this year. The game can be heard on 970 WATH and 97.1 FM tonight with pre game at 5:45 and tip off at 6.

In other area boys playoff action tonight, Vinton County battles Fairfield Union and Southeastern takes on Wellston.

The Columbus Blue Jackets edged out the Detroit Red Wings last night, 3-2. The Red Wings took the 2-0 early lead over Columbus on two first period goals in the first three minutes of the game. The Jackets would respond just two minutes later on an RJ Umberger wrist-shot goal. After a scoreless second period, Derek Dorsett tied the game up early in the third. But it was Vinny Prospal who tallied the game winning backhand goal with just seconds remaining to give Columbus the victory. The Jackets will now head to St. Louis on Saturday night. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 7:45 and drop of the puck at 8.

Elsewhere in the NHL, Boston bested Tampa Bay, 4-2. Ottawa clipped the New York Rangers, 3-2 in a shootout. The New York Islanders snuck past Montreal, 4-3 in overtime. Winnipeg clipped Carolina, 4-3. New Jersey ousted Washington, 3-2. Florida blasted Philadelphia, 5-2 and Toronto handled Buffalo, 3-1.

In NCAA Top 25 play yesterday, Cal upset #23 Oregon, 48-46 and #6 Duke blasted Virginia Tech, 88-56.

The Ohio Bobcats return to action tomorrow night as they hit the road for a Bracket Buster matchup with Belmont. The Bobcats are on a roll, but will face a tough task in the Bruins, rated Top 30 RPI. The game can be heard on Power 105 tomorrow night with pre game at 9:45 and tip off at 10PM.
