The Trimble Tomcats fell to the Miller Falcons last night, 65-54 in a Division 4 Sectional Final. The game was neck-and-neck at the half, with Miller up 27-26. However, Miller started to create a gap in the third and led by four going into the final period. The Falcons would pull away late led by Skylar Hook’s 20 points. Miller will advance to the Convocation Center next Tuesday night.
The Athens Lady Bulldogs won their first district title since 2003 last night with a 45-44 win over top-seeded Jackson. The Lady Bulldogs played stellar defense throughout the night and trailed by just one going into the intermission. In the second half, Emma Stanley would control the glass with some big inside buckets followed by a clutch three and free throws late by Dominique Doseck to give Athens the upset win. The Bulldogs were led in scoring by Doseck with 19 points. The Lady Bulldogs advance to the regional semifinals next Tuesday against Fairfield Union at Zanesville HS. The Athens boys hit the hardwood tomorrow night as they take on Chillicothe in the District Semifinals at the Convo. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game at 7:45 and tip off at 8.
In other area playoff action, Eastern upended Southern, 55-42 to claim a trip to the Convo.
The Columbus Blue Jackets fell to the Dallas Stars last night, 5-4 in overtime. The teams would trade goals early on, with Dallas taking a 3-2 lead into the third period. Cam Atkinson would tie the game up at three early in the third period, but Dallas would answer seven minutes later to reclaim the lead. However, RJ Umberger would put the puck in the back of the net with less than two minutes remaining in overtime. But in overtime, Loui Eriksson would score to give the Stars the victory. Columbus will now head to Chicago on Friday night. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 8:15 and drop of the puck at 8:30.
The Cleveland Cavaliers topped the Chicago Bulls, 101-98 without star guard Kyrie Irving. The Cavs and Bulls were tied at the half, but Cleveland would jump out to a four-point lead after three quarters. The Bulls would make a furious comeback, but Dion Waiters’ 25 points were too much for Chicago. The Cavs will now host Toronto tonight at 7.
In other NBA action last night, Milwaukee bested Dallas, 95-90. Brooklyn topped New Orleans, 101-97. Miami outlasted Sacramento, 141-129 in double overtime. Indiana toppled Golden State, 108-97 and Orlando handled Philadelphia, 98-84.
The Ohio Bobcats are back in action tonight as they host 24th ranked Akron in a battle for the top of the MAC. The Bobcats fell to rival Akron in the first matchup, but the Bobcats have revenge on their mind as they welcome the Zips to Athens. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game at 6:06 with the Bobcat Insider and tip off at 7.
In NCAA Top 25 play yesterday, Minnesota upset top-ranked Indiana, 77-73. #17 Wisconsin blew past Nebraska, 77-46. Xavier knocked off #19 Memphis, 64-62 and Tennessee defeated #8 Florida, 64-58.
