Morning Sports – 3/8/13

The Athens Bulldogs claimed their first District Title since 1965 last night with a 64-54 win over Miami Trace. The Bulldogs raced out of the gates, jumping out to a 22-point lead early in the game behind stellar play from freshman Ibi Watson and a suffocating defense. However, the Panthers would cut into the deficit, knocking it down to just one with 4 minutes left after a big trey. However, Watson would turn it on again for Athens, hitting a couple of big buckets down the stretch to give Athens the title. Watson led the Bulldogs with 26 points. Athens will now take on Warren in the Regional Semifinals next Thursday night at the Convo. The game can be heard on Power 105 and 970 WATH with pre game at 7:45 and tip off at 8.

In other area boys hoops, Vinton County fell to Warren, 61-46 in a District Title matchup.

The Columbus Blue Jackets won their third in a row last night, 2-1 in overtime over Vancouver.  The Jackets were on the board first on a RJ Umberger tip-in goal in the first period. However, Henrik Sedin tallied a wrist shot goal early in the third period to tie it. In overtime, Matt Calvert would come through for Columbus with the snap shot goal to give the Jackets the victory. Sergei Bobrovsky was stellar, saving 34 shots on the night. Columbus will now host Detroit on Saturday afternoon. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 1:30 and drop of the puck at 2.

Elsewhere in the NHL, Detroit blanked Edmonton, 3-0. Winnipeg clipped Tampa Bay, 2-1. Montreal topped Carolina, 4-2. Washington blasted Florida, 7-1. Pittsburgh clipped Philadelphia, 5-4. The New York Rangers edged the New York Islanders, 2-1 in overtime. New Jersey snuck past Buffalo, 3-2 in a shootout and Boston bested Toronto, 4-2.

The Ohio Bobcats are back in action for senior night in the regular season finale tomorrow as they host rival Miami. The Bobcats have already locked up the 2 seed in the MAC Tournament, but will look to finish strong in the Battle of the Bricks. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game at 3 with the Bobcat Insider and tip off at 4.

In the NCAA Top 25 last night, #10 Michigan State bested #22 Wisconsin, 58-43 and Colorado upset #19 Oregon, 76-53.
