Ohio guard DJ Cooper was named MAC East Player of the week yesterday. Cooper averaged 20.5 points per game with 3.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds over the past week to help lead Ohio to a share of the MAC regular season title. Cooper also became the first player in NCAA history to hit 2,000 points, 900 assists, 600 rebounds and 300 steals in a career this week. The Bobcats begin their run at the MAC Tournament Title on Friday night in the Semifinals. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game at 8 with the Bobcat Insider and tip off at 9.
The Ohio State Buckeyes topped Illinois yesterday, 68-55. The Buckeyes controlled the game from the opening tip and held Illinois to just 35 percent shooting on the night. Deshaun Thomas tallied 19 points. The Buckeyes will now take on either Purdue or Nebraska in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Friday at 5:30.
In NCAA Top 25 action yesterday, #2 Indiana clipped #7 Michigan, 72-71. #10 Michigan State bested Northwestern, 71-61. Temple upset #21 VCU, 84-76 and #22 Wisconsin edged Penn State, 63-60.
Ohio baseball fell to Oakland yesterday, 6-2. The Bobcats took the early lead in the bottom of the first, scoring twice on a wild pitch. However, it was all Grizzlies from that point on, scoring six unanswered runs. Ohio baseball will return to action on Tuesday as they travel to seventh ranked Kentucky at 4.
Ohio women’s basketball head coach Semeka Randall has been let go by the University. Randall was in her fifth and final year of her contract and led Ohio to a 50-103 record and 22-58 mark in the MAC over her time at Ohio. The Lady Bobcats were 6-23 this season.
The Columbus Blue Jackets captured their fifth straight win with a 3-2 victory over Detroit yesterday in a shootout. After a scoreless first period, the Jackets and Red Wings traded early goals in the second, but RJ Umberger gave Columbus a 2-1 lead on a slap shot goal. In the third, Johan Franzen would tie the game for Detroit and send it to overtime. After a scoreless overtime, the game would head to a shootout where Ryan Johansen and Matt Calvert would tally goals to give the Jackets the win. Columbus will now host Vancouver on Tuesday night. The Cleveland Cavaliers fell to the Toronto Raptors last night, 100-96. The Cavs jumped out to a 17-point lead in the first half, only to have it cut down to nine at the half. In the third, the Raptors would take the lead by outscoring Cleveland by 14. The Cavs comeback efforts would fall short as Cleveland was led by Dion Waiters with 21 points on the night. The Cavs will now host Washington on Tuesday night at 7.
Elsewhere in the NBA, Dallas handled Minnesota, 100-77. New Orleans edged Portland, 98-96. Miami blew past Indiana, 105-91. Orlando bested Philadelphia, 99-91. The LA Lakers topped Chicago, 90-81 and Oklahoma City outlasted Boston, 91-79.
