Morning Sports – 3/26/13

Ohio guard DJ Cooper was named to the Lou Henson Mid-Major All-America team yesterday. The squad consists of the Top 25 Mid-Major players in the country. Cooper is a finalist for the 2013 Lou Henson Award, given to the nation’s top Mid-Major player. Cooper averaged 14.1 points per game and was seventh in the nation with 7.1 assists per outing.

In Spring Training action yesterday, the Cincinnati Reds fell to the Seattle Mariners, 16-0. Reds pitcher Homer Bailey struggled mightily, giving up nine runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings while walking two. Jack Hannahan and Zack Cozart doubled, while Brandon Phillips tripled in the game, but the Reds could not put up any runs with seven hits. Cincinnati will now battle Chicago tonight at 10.

In NBA action last night, Miami extended their winning streak to 27 games with a 108-94 win over Orlando. New Orleans handled Denver, 110-86. Indiana bested Atlanta, 100-94. Washington dominated Memphis, 107-94 and Utah toppled Philadelphia, 107-91.

The Columbus Blue Jackets return to the ice tonight looking to stay red hot as they hit the road to take on the Vancouver Canucks. The Jackets are two points back of eighth place in the Western Conference and will look start off the road trip on a good note. The Jackets have split the previous two matchups with Vancouver this season. The game can be heard on 970 WATH and 97.1 FM with pre game at 9:45 and drop of the puck at 10.

In NHL play yesterday, Minnesota blew past Dallas, 7-4. Nashville clipped Edmonton, 3-2. Ottawa clipped New Jersey, 3-2 in a shootout. Boston snuck past Toronto, 3-2 in a shootout and LA ousted Chicago, 5-4.

The Cincinnati Bengals made the re-signing of wide out Brandon Tate official yesterday. Tate signed a one-year deal heading into his fifth year and caught 13 passes for 211 yards and a touchdown last year. Also, the Bengals inked cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones to a three-year deal. Jones is in his fourth season with the Bengals and started five games last year, while finishing seventh in the NFL in punt return average.

The Cleveland Browns signed defensive back Kevin Barnes to a one-year contract yesterday. Barnes has played in 31 NFL games for Washington and Detroit. In 2011 Barnes tallied 26 tackles and two interceptions in 15 games with Washington.
