A FREEZE WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 WEDNESDAY MORNING, WHILE A FREEZE WARNING WILL BE IN EFFECT FROM 1 AM TO 9 AM THURSDAY FOR ATHENS, GALLIA, HOCKING, JACKSON, MEIGS, MORGAN, PERRY, VINTON AND WASHINGTON COUNTIES.

Morning Sports – 4/5/13

The Cincinnati Reds topped the LA Angels to capture a series win, 5-4. The Reds took the early lead on a Shin-Soo Choo solo homer in the first and a Todd Frazier solo blast in the second. However, the Angels tied it in the third on a Josh Hamilton RBI single. With the game tied in the fifth, Chris Heisey delivered a two-run homer to push the Reds back on top. The Angels cut the lead to one with a run in the seventh, but Aroldis Chapman shut the door for the win in the ninth. Cincinnati will now host Washington tonight. Homer Bailey will square off against Dan Haren. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 6:40 and first pitch at 7:10.

The Cleveland Indians fell to the Toronto Blue Jays last night, 10-8. The Jays led by two after three innings, but the Indians would come right back to tie it in the fourth on homers from Carlos Santana and Mark Reynolds. The Jays responded with three in the fifth, but Cleveland would put up three more in the sixth behind RBI doubles from Carlos Santana and Lonnie Chisenhall. However, the Blue Jays tallied three in the bottom half to put the game out of reach. The Indians will now head to Tampa Bay tonight at 7.

Elsewhere in the MLB, Philadelphia blanked Atlanta, 2-0. The New York Yankees bested Boston, 4-2. Washington handled Miami, 6-1. Oakland blew past Seattle, 8-2. Baltimore topped Tampa Bay, 6-3. Kansas City clipped the Chicago White Sox, 3-1. San Diego edged the New York Mets, 2-1. Minnesota dominated Detroit, 8-2 and the Chicago Cubs ousted Pittsburgh, 3-2.

The Columbus Blue Jackets topped the Nashville Predators last night, 3-1. The Jackets were on the board first behind a James Wisniewski slap shot goal midway through the second. However, four minutes later, the Predators would come right back to tie it. But in the third period Columbus would pull away. Marion Gaborik would score his first goal as a Blue Jacket and Matt Calvert pushed to lead out to two to give Columbus the win. The Jackets will now head to St. Louis tonight at 8.

Elsewhere in the NHL, Montreal handled Winnipeg, 4-1. Tampa Bay blanked Carolina, 5-0. Washington clipped the New York Islanders in a shootout, 2-1. Philadelphia defeated Toronto, 5-3 and Boston edged New Jersey, 1-0.

In area high school baseball last night, Athens blasted Meigs, 11-0. Alexander edged Nelsonville-York, 1-0 and Vinton County topped Wellston, 4-1.
