Morning Sports – 4/12/13

The Cincinnati Reds are back in action tonight as they head to Pittsburgh. The Reds have lost two in a row, but will look to get going against a struggling Pirate offense. Cincinnati will send hurler Mike Leake to the hill as he will duel with A.J. Burnett. The Reds and Pirates can be heard on 970 WATH tonight with pre game at 6:35 and first pitch at 7:05.

In MLB action yesterday, Detroit blasted Toronto, 11-1. San Francisco edged the Chicago Cubs, 7-6. Baltimore clipped Boston, 3-2 and Washington defeated the Chicago White Sox, 7-4.

In area high school baseball action last night, Athens toppled Nelsonville-York, 12-3. Athens scored nine runs in the third behind a pair of RBI hits from Ryan Luehrman. Alexander blew past Vinton County, 14-1 and Meigs handled Wellston, 11-2.

In area high school softball play yesterday, Athens blanked Nelsonville-York, 5-0. Wellston shutout Meigs, 6-0 and Alexander dominated Vinton County, 11-0.

Former Pittsburgh Steeler linebacker James Harrison is scheduled to visit the Cincinnati Bengals today. Harrison was cut by the Steelers after the two sides failed to work out a pay cut. Harrison had 70 tackles and two forced fumbles last year with Pittsburgh. Also, the Bengals released Jason Allen. Allen played in four games due to injuries and was used primarily on special teams.

The Cleveland Browns traded 2012 sixth-round pick linebacker Emmanuel Acho to the Philadelphia Eagles yesterday in exchange for running back Dion Lewis. Lewis will serve as a possible third-down back and possible kick returner in Cleveland. In limited action last year, Lewis carried the ball 13 times for 69 yards and one touchdown.

In NHL action last night, St. Louis blanked Minnesota, 2-0. San Jose clipped Detroit, 3-2 in a shootout. Pittsburgh toppled Tampa Bay, 6-3. Montreal handled Buffalo, 5-1. Washington bested Carolina, 3-1. Ottawa topped Philadelphia, 3-1. The New York Islanders edged Boston, 2-1 and Winnipeg dominated Florida, 7-2.

In the NBA yesterday, Chicago outlasted the New York Knicks in overtime, 118-111.
