The Cincinnati Reds toppled the Miami Marlins last night, 11-1. The Reds scored once in the third on a wild pitch, but the Marlins answered with one in the fourth. However, it was all Reds from then on. Cincinnati scored four in the fourth and four again in the fifth behind a Shin-Soo Choo RBI double and RBI singles from Zack Cozart and Chris Heisey. Todd Frazier continued to pile it on with a two-run blast in the sixth. Reds pitcher Tony Cingrani was solid in his major league debut, throwing five innings and giving up one run on five hits with eight strikeouts. Cincinnati hosts Miami again tonight. The Cleveland Indians lost their fourth in a row last night, falling to the Boston Red Sox, 6-3. The game was knotted at one after two, but the Red Sox jumped out to a two-run lead in the fifth. The Indians cut it back to one on an RBI groundout from Drew Stubbs. However, Boston pushed it out of reach in the seventh with three runs. The Indians will look to snap their losing streak as they head to Houston tonight at 8.
Elsewhere in the MLB, Toronto topped the Chicago White Sox, 3-1. Atlanta bested Pittsburgh, 6-4. Baltimore toppled Tampa Bay, 10-6 in 10 innings. St. Louis edged Philadelphia, 4-3. Seattle blanked Detroit, 2-0. Colorado handled the New York Mets, 11-3. The Chicago Cubs defeated Texas, 6-2 and Milwaukee blew past San Francisco, 7-2.
The Columbus Blue Jackets fell to the LA Kings last night, 2-1. The Kings jumped on the board in the first, but Columbus responded to tie it at one midway through the second on a Dalton Prout wrist shot goal. However, just over a minute later the Kings took the lead right back on a wrist shot goal. The Jackets will be back in action on Sunday as they visit San Jose. The Cincinnati Bengals announced their 2013 schedule last night. The Bengals open the regular season on September 8th in Chicago. The Bengals second game of the season in Cincinnati against the Steelers will be featured on Monday Night Football. Three of the first five Bengal opponents were playoff teams last season.
The Cleveland Browns announced their schedule for the upcoming season yesterday as well. The Browns open the season at home against Miami on September 8th. Cleveland hosts four of their first six games next year. The NFL Draft kicks off next weekend.
In area high school baseball action last night, Alexander knocked off Athens, 7-6. Wellston clipped Nelsonville-York, 4-3. Trimble edged Belpre, 6-5. Federal Hocking fell to Parkersburg South, 5-0 and Southern handled Miller, 11-0.
In area high school softball yesterday, Alexander toppled Athens, 14-4. Wellston blanked Nelsonville-York, 10-0 and Trimble dominated Belpre, 13-3.
