The Cincinnati Reds were toppled by the Washington Nationals last night, 8-1. The Nats jumped out to a six-run lead after three with two runs in the second and four in the third behind homers from Bryce Harper and Danny Espinosa. Cincinnati responded with their only run of the night in the fourth on a Joey Votto solo shot. The Reds fall to 13-10 with the loss and will continue the series in Washington tonight. Homer Bailey will take the mound for Cincinnati against Jordan Zimmerman. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 6:35 and first pitch at 7:05.
Elsewhere in the MLB, the Chicago Cubs edged Miami, 4-3. The New York Yankees bested Toronto, 5-3. Boston handled Houston, 7-2. The LA Dodgers clipped the New York Mets, 3-2. Kansas City outlasted Detroit, 8-3 in 10 innings. Pittsburgh topped Philadelphia, 6-4. Texas snuck past Minnesota, 2-1 and the Chicago White Sox blew past Tampa Bay, 5-2.
The Cleveland Browns drafted LSU linebacker/defensive lineman Barkevious Mingo yesterday with the sixth overall pick in the first round. The 6-5, 240 pound “hybrid” linebacker tallied 8.5 tackles for a loss and 4.5 sacks last season with the Tigers. Meanwhile, the Cincinnati Bengals drafted Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert with the 21st overall pick yesterday. Eifert hauled in 50 catches for 685 yards and four touchdowns last year in helping to lead the Fighting Irish to the National Championship game. The second and third rounds begin today at 6:30.
The Columbus Blue Jackets bested the Dallas Stars last night, 3-1. The Jackets were on the board first just 19 seconds into the game when Cam Atkinson tallied a goal. The Stars would knot things up at one in the second, but Columbus answered right back on a power play goal from Mark Letestu early in the third. The Jackets would put away the crucial win on an empty net goal from Cam Atkinson in the final minutes. The Jackets are now tied with Minnesota in eighth with one game left in the season. With one left to play, Columbus would need a win and a Dallas or Edmonton win on Saturday to clinch a playoff berth. The Jackets will host Nashville on Saturday night. In other NHL play, St. Louis toppled Calgary, 4-1. Montreal bested Winnipeg, 4-2. Boston shutout Tampa Bay, 2-0. Detroit handled Nashville, 5-2. Toronto blanked Florida, 4-0. New Jersey edged Pittsburgh, 3-2. The New York Rangers clipped Carolina, 4-3 in overtime. Ottawa snuck past Washington, 2-1 in overtime and Philadelphia defeated the New York Islanders, 2-1.
In NBA playoff action yesterday, the Miami Heat took a 3-0 series lead over Milwaukee with a 104-91 win and Chicago took a 2-1 series lead over Brooklyn with a 79-76 win.
