Morning Sports – 5/3/13

The Cincinnati Reds are back in action today as they head to Chicago for a battle with the Cubs. The Reds have struggled on the road this year, holding a 3-10 record away from Cincinnati and have hit just .195 with 17 runs in the last nine games. Reds hurler Mike Leake will toe the rubber against Carlos Villanueva at Wrigley Field. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 1:50 and first pitch at 2:20.

In MLB action last night, the Chicago White Sox bested Texas, 3-1. Washington defeated Atlanta, 3-1. Philadelphia handled Miami, 7-2. San Diego topped the Chicago Cubs, 4-2. Boston ousted Toronto, 3-1 and St. Louis edged Milwaukee, 6-5.

In area high school baseball play yesterday, Athens toppled Wellston, 12-5. Meigs handled Alexander, 8-2. Nelsonville-York outlasted Vinton County, 6-4. Southern split a doubleheader with River Valley, winning the first 6-5 and falling in the second, 3-2. Federal Hocking blanked Waterford, 7-0 and Eastern edged Wahama, 4-3.

In area high school softball last night, Wellston shutout Athens, 13-0. Meigs clipped Alexander, 2-1. Nelsonville-York blanked Vinton County, 5-0. Eastern handled Trimble, 15-0 and Federal Hocking ousted Waterford, 4-1.

In NBA playoff action last night, Brooklyn tied the series with Chicago at three with a 95-92 win.

In the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs last night, Washington handled the New York Rangers, 3-1 and Ottawa defeated Montreal, 4-2.

Columbus Blue Jackets right wing Marian Gaborik will have surgery soon to repair a “mesh patch” put in place during surgery for a sports hernia in June of 2001. Gaborik will not be able to play in the World Championships for his home country of Slovakia, but will be healthy for the start of Blue Jackets training camp in September. The 31-year old had three goals and five assists in 12 games with Columbus after being acquired from the New York Rangers.
