The Cincinnati Reds blanked the Miami Marlins last night, 4-0. Cincinnati jumped on the board first, tallying one in the first on a Brandon Phillips RBI double. The Reds pushed the lead out to three in the fourth, behind a Shin-Soo Choo solo blast and a Joey Votto RBI single. Choo would smash another home run to give the Reds a four run lead in the sixth as the Reds would pull away for the win. Mike Leake was solid on the hill for the Reds, throwing 6.2 innings and scattering nine hits with six strikeouts. Cincinnati will wrap up the series with Miami tonight. Mat Latos will toe the rubber against Jose Fernandez. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 6:40 and first pitch at 7:10.
The Cleveland Indians toppled the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday, 10-3. The Indians took the early lead in the third on a Mark Reynolds two-RBI double. The Phillies answered to cut the lead to one in the bottom half on a Jimmy Rollins RBI single, but Mike Aviles hit a solo homer in the fourth and Nick Swisher blasted a two run shot in the fifth. In the eighth, Cleveland put the game out of reach when Jason Kipnis crushed a three run homer. The Indians are now 22-17 and will have today off before hosting Seattle on Friday night at 7.
Elsewhere in the MLB, St. Louis topped the New York Mets, 4-2. The Chicago Cubs bested Colorado, 6-3. Toronto toppled San Francisco, 11-3. Pittsburgh ousted Milwaukee, 3-1. Seattle dominated the New York Yankees, 12-2. Boston blew past Tampa Bay, 9-2. Arizona edged Atlanta, 5-3. Texas defeated Oakland, 6-2. The Chicago White Sox handled Minnesota, 9-4. Houston outlasted Detroit, 7-5 and San Diego topped Baltimore, 8-4.
In area high school baseball playoff action last night, Wellston bested Nelsonville-York, 9-4. Trimble clipped St. Joe, 4-2. Southern dominated South Gallia, 16-2. River Valley edged Belpre, 4-2 and Eastern handled South Webster, 11-1.
In NBA playoff action last night, Miami finished off a series win over the Chicago Bulls with a 94-91 win and the Memphis Grizzlies advanced with an 88-84 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder.
In NHL Stanley Cup playoff action last night, Chicago took a 1-0 series lead over Detroit with a 4-1 win.
