The Cincinnati Reds edged the New York Mets last night, 4-3. The Reds jumped out to an early three-run lead in the first behind a Brandon Phillips RBI single and a Jay Bruce RBI double. The Mets would come back though, tying it in the third on a three-run homer from Marlon Byrd. But in the sixth, Jay Bruce was the difference in the ballgame with a solo homer. Johnny Cueto picked up the win in his return to the Reds, throwing five innings and surrendering three runs with eight strikeouts. The Reds will take on the Mets again tonight. Mike Leake will take the hill against Jonathan Niese. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 6:40 and first pitch at 7:10.
The Cleveland Indians won in walk off fashion over the Seattle Mariners yesterday, 10-8 in 10 innings. Seattle was out on top early, but the Tribe came right back in the second with four runs behind homers from Ryan Raburn and Yan Gomes. The Mariners and Tribe would trade runs throughout the game, but Seattle took the lead going into the bottom of the ninth. With the game on the line, Tom Wilhelmson dropped an easy play at first that allowed Jason Kipnis to score and send the game to extras. The Mariners once again took the lead in the top of the tenth, but Yan Gomes and the Indians answered with a three-run homer to win Cleveland’s fifth in a row. The Indians will now host Detroit tonight at 7.
Elsewhere in the MLB, the LA Dodgers topped Milwaukee, 3-1. Miami handled Philadelphia, 5-1. Atlanta toppled Minnesota, 5-1. The New York Yankees outlasted Baltimore, 6-4 in 10 innings. Toronto bested Tampa Bay, 7-5. Arizona defeated Colorado, 5-1. Houston clipped Kansas City, 6-5. The LA Dodgers ousted Milwaukee, 3-1. The Chicago White Sox bested Boston, 6-4 and Oakland dominated Texas, 9-2.
In area high school baseball playoff action last night, Alexander topped Federal Hocking, 5-1 and Southern bested Valley to win a district title, 6-1.
In area high school softball action yesterday, Federal Hocking ousted Waterford, 8-3.
In NHL Stanley Cup playoff action last night, Detroit took a 2-1 series lead over Chicago with a 3-1 victory.
