The Southern Ohio Copperheads opened the 2013 season with a 4-3 win over the Licking County Settlers last night. The Settlers jumped out to an early lead on three runs in the third, but Southern Ohio would chip away at the lead with two in the sixth on a Travis Hennessey RBI single. The Copperheads tied it in the seventh when James Coates scored on a wild pitch, but in the ninth, Eddie Sutton came through with an RBI single to give Southern Ohio the win. The Copperheads will host the Settlers for the home opener tonight at Bob Wren Stadium. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game at 7:15 and first pitch at 7:30.
In MLB action last night, Kansas City bested Minnesota, 7-3. St. Louis outlasted Arizona, 12-8. Boston topped Texas, 6-3. Baltimore ousted Houston, 3-1. Detroit defeated Tampa Bay, 5-2. Oakland clipped the Chicago White Sox, 5-4 in 10 innings and Philadelphia handled Milwaukee, 5-1.
The Cincinnati Reds selected Phillip Ervin, a centerfielder from Samford University with the 27th pick in the first round of the MLB Draft yesterday. Ervin hit .337 with 11 homers and 21 stolen bases this season and Baseball America ranked him he third-best centerfielder in the draft. The Reds then took pitcher Michael Lorenzen with the 38th pick. Lorenzen played at Cal State Fullerton, saving 19 games with a 1.99 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 22 innings pitched. He also hit .335 with seven homers and 53 RBIs as an outfielder for the Titans. The Cleveland Indians selected high school outfielder Clint Frazier as the fifth overall pick in the draft yesterday. The 18-year old hit .485 with 17 homers and 45 RBIs in his senior season in Georgia. The Reds host St. Louis tonight. Mike Leake will face Adam Wainwright. In the NBA Finals last night, the San Antonio Spurs took a 1-0 series lead over the Miami Heat with a 92-88 win. The Spurs clinched the win on a Tony Parker shot with a five seconds left in the game that just beat the shot clock. San Antonio was led by Parker with 21 points and Tim Duncan with 20 points and 14 rebounds. The Spurs and Heat battle in game two on Sunday night at 8.
