Morning Sports – 6/20/13

The Cincinnati Reds edged the Pittsburgh Pirates last night, 2-1 in 13 innings. Pittsburgh got on the board first in the third when Russell Martin drove in a run when he reached on an error. Bronson Arroyo was excellent though, throwing seven innings and giving up just one run. In the ninth, Jay Bruce came through to tie the game with a solo homer. After a few scoreless frames, Brandon Phillips delivered a game winning single in the 13th. The Reds will wrap up the series with Pittsburgh today. Homer Bailey will face Brandon Cumpton. The game can be heard on 970 WATH following the Midday Journal at 12:35.

The Cleveland Indians bested the Kansas City Royals yesterday, 6-3. Kansas City jumped out to a two-run lead in the fifth, but the Indians came right back. Michael Brantley hit a solo homer in the fifth and the Tribe scored three in the sixth on a Mike Aviles RBI single and a Brantley sac fly. In the eighth, Cleveland put the game out of reach on another Michael Brantley solo blast. The Indians are off today before hosting Minnesota on Friday at 7.

Elsewhere in the MLB, St. Louis bested the Chicago Cubs, 4-1. Milwaukee topped Houston, 3-1. Minnesota defeated the Chicago White Sox, 7-4. Texas handled Oakland, 9-4. Atlanta ousted the New York Mets, 5-3. Tampa Bay blew past Boston, 6-2. Toronto ousted Colorado, 5-2. Washington outlasted Philadelphia, 6-2 in 11 innings. The LA Dodgers blanked the New York Yankees, 6-0. San Francisco edged San Diego, 4-2. Arizona clipped Miami, 3-1 and Baltimore dominated Detroit, 13-3.

The Southern Ohio Copperheads continued their red hot start to the season last night with an 11-3 win over the Hamilton Joes. The Copperheads scored five times in the sixth and six times in the eighth behind three runs walked in, a Ryan Stone RBI single and a Taylor Burch RBI double. The Snakes are now 11-1 and will continue their road trip tonight as they take on the Cincinnati Steam. The game can be heard on copperheadbaseball.com with pre game at 6:50 and first pitch at 7:05.

In the NHL Stanley Cup Finals last night, the Chicago Blackhawks edged out the Boston Bruins, 6-5 in overtime to tie the series at two.
