Morning Sports – 6/24/13

The Cincinnati Reds topped the Arizona Diamondbacks yesterday, 4-2. The Reds jumped on the D-Backs early, scoring three times in the first behind homers from Shin-Soo Choo and Brandon Phillips. The Reds tacked on one more in the second on a Zack Cozart sac-fly. However, Arizona scored once in the eighth and once more in the ninth before putting two on and the winning run at the plate. Mat Latos was solid, throwing 7.2 innings, giving up one run on six hits with 13 strikeouts. The Reds will have today off before heading out west to take on the Oakland Athletics. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 9:35 and first pitch at 10:05.

The Cleveland Indians fell to the Minnesota Twins yesterday, 5-3. The Twins scored first, tacking on one on a Josh Willingham RBI single. However, the Tribe came back to take the lead on a Yan Gomes sac-fly in the second and a Jason Kipnis RBI double in the third. But the Twins came right back, scoring twice in the fifth and once in the seventh to take a lead they would not give up. The Indians will now hit the road to take on the Baltimore Orioles tonight at 7.

Elsewhere in the MLB, the LA Dodgers topped San Diego, 3-1. Seattle outlasted Oakland, 6-3 in 10 innings. Miami ousted San Francisco, 7-2. Pittsburgh edged the LA Angels, 10-9 in 10 innings. The Southern Ohio Copperheads ousted the Dayton Docs last night, 2-1. The Snakes scored twice in the first on a Jesse Puscheck RBI single. The Docs tallied one in the third, but that would be all. Jackson Sowell was strong on the hill for the Copperheads, throwing five innings and surrendering just one run on five hits with five strikeouts. Southern Ohio will have the next two nights off before hitting the road to take on the Grand Lake Mariners. That game can be heard on copperheadbaseball.com with pre game at 6:45 and first pitch at 7.
