The Cincinnati Reds fell on a walk off at the hands of the San Diego Padres last night, 2-1. The Reds got stellar pitching from Mike Leake, who threw seven scoreless innings, striking out five. The Redlegs got on the board first in the fifth on a Cesar Izturis groundout. However, in the ninth, Chris Denorfia hit a two-run homer to win the game for San Diego. Cincinnati will take on the Padres again tonight. Mat Latos will take the hill against Edison Volquez. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 9:40 and first pitch at 10:10.
The Cleveland Indians won their fifth in a row in walk off fashion last night, 3-2. The Indians scored once in the second on a Carlos Santana sac-fly, but the White Sox would come back to take a one run lead in the sixth. However, in the bottom half Cleveland would come back to tie it and in the ninth inning, Jason Giambi stepped to the plate. The Indians will continue their series with Chicago tonight at 7.
Elsewhere in the MLB, Oakland handled Toronto, 9-4. Milwaukee blanked the Chicago Cubs, 5-0. The New York Mets edged Miami, 6-5. Atlanta outlasted Colorado, 9-8 in 10 innings. Pittsburgh toppled St. Louis, 9-2. Texas snuck past the LA Angels, 4-3 and Tampa Bay ousted Boston, 2-1.
Jonathan Nichols, head coach of the Southern Ohio Copperheads, was named the GLSCL Coach of the year yesterday after leading the Snakes to the top overall seed in the league in his first season. The Copperheads’ Jesse Puscheck was also named the Gary Henschen GLSCL Player of the Year yesterday and Anthony Misiewicz was named top pitching prospect. The Copperheads will start their playoff run on Wednesday night.
