The Cincinnati Reds were toppled by the Chicago Cubs last night, 9-1. The Cubs came racing out of the gates, scoring twice in the second on a Wellington Castillo two-run homer and three more in the third on a Dan Murphy two-run blast. The Cubs pulled away with one in the fourth, sixth and another Castillo homer in the seventh. Cincinnati’s only offense came in the seventh on a Corky Miller RBI double. The Redlegs will wrap up the series with Chicago today. Mike Leake will toe the rubber against Jeff Smardzija. The game can be heard on 970 WATH at 12:35 immediately following the Midday Journal.
The Cleveland Indians fell to the Kansas City Royals yesterday, 6-3. The Indians were on the board first on a Michael Brantley RBI single in the first. However, Kansas City would come back in the fifth to tie it on an Alcides Escobar solo homer and then pulled away in the sixth with three runs on a Mike Moustakas RBI double and a Salvador Perez RBI single. Cleveland cut into the lead on a Michael Bourn RBI double in the seventh, but would fall short. The Indians finish the series with the Royals today at noon.
Elsewhere in the MLB, St. Louis topped Milwaukee, 4-2. Minnesota clipped Oakland, 4-3. Detroit dominated the Chicago White Sox, 9-1. Pittsburgh edged Texas, 5-4. Boston blanked Tampa Bay, 2-0. Atlanta ousted Miami, 4-3. Washington defeated the New York Mets, 6-3. The LA Angels blew past Toronto, 12-6. San Diego handled Philadelphia, 8-2. The New York Yankees outlasted Baltimore, 7-5 and Houston toppled Seattle, 13-2.
