Morning Sports – 9/18/13

The Cincinnati Reds dominated the Houston Astros last night, 10-0. The Reds jumped on the Astros early, scoring four times in the first on RBI singles from Jay Bruce, Todd Frazier and Zack Cozart. Cozart added another RBI hit in the third and the Redlegs blew the game wide open in the fourth on a Jay Bruce grand slam. Mike Leake was strong on the hill, throwing eight scoreless innings, giving up just five hits and six strikeouts. Cincinnati wraps up the series in Houston tonight. Greg Reynolds will toe the rubber for the Reds taking on Brad Peacock. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 7:40 and first pitch at 8:10.

The Cleveland Indians topped the Kansas City Royals yesterday, 5-3. The Royals were on the board first, scoring once in the first on an Eric Hosmer RBI double and two more in the third behind a Mike Moustakas RBI double. However, the Indians would come storming back, scoring once in the sixth with a Michael Brantley RBI single and then two in the seventh to tie it on a Michael Bourn RBI triple. Cleveland took the lead in the eighth with an Asdrubal Cabrera RBI double and added an insurance run on a Bourn solo shot in the ninth. The Indians finish the series in Kansas City tonight at 8.

Elsewhere in the MLB, St. Louis toppled Colorado, 11-4. Milwaukee edged the Chicago Cubs, 4-3. San Diego bested Pittsburgh, 5-2. The Chicago White Sox edged Minnesota, 4-3. Texas handled Tampa Bay, 7-1. San Francisco ousted the New York Mets, 8-5. Baltimore clipped Boston, 3-2. Detroit defeated Seattle, 6-2. Toronto blanked the New York Yankees, 4-0. Washington shutout Atlanta, 4-0 and Philadelphia topped Miami, 6-4.

The first AP state high school football rankings were released yesterday. In Division III, Athens came in at sixth, with two first place votes. Also, in Division VII, Trimble was placed sixth with one first place vote. The Athens County Game of the Week on Power 105 and 970 WATH on Friday night will feature Jackson at Athens. Pre game starts at 7:15 with the kick at 7:30.
