The Cincinnati Reds season came to a close last night with a 6-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the National League Wild Card Game. The Pirates jumped on the Reds early, with a pair of solo homers from Marlon Byrd and Russell Martin. The Reds cut into the lead in the fourth on a Jay Bruce RBI single, but the Pirates responded in the home half on a Neil Walker RBI double. Shin-Soo Choo would homer in the eighth, but Cincinnati could not muster a comeback. The Pirates advance to take on the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday.
The Cleveland Indians take the field tonight for the American League wild card game as they host Tampa Bay. Danny Salazar will duel against Alex Cobb at 8. The winner will advance to take on Boston on Friday.
The Cincinnati Bengals signed linebacker Michael Boley yesterday with injuries depleting the linebacking corps. Vontaze Burfict suffered a neck injury against Cleveland, but is expected to play on Sunday against New England. Boley is in his ninth season and tallied 109 tackles with Atlanta in 2007. He has started at least 11 games in his previous eight seasons. He made 11 starts last year with the New York Giants and had 92 tackles and three interceptions. The Bengals battle New England on Sunday on 970 WATH.
In NHL opening night action, Chicago outlasted Washington, 6-4. Toronto edged Montreal, 4-3 and Winnipeg ousted Edmonton, 5-4.
