Morning Sports – 10/3/13

The Cleveland Indians fell in the American League Wild Card game to the Tampa Bay Rays last night, 4-0. The Rays got on the board in the third inning on a Delmon Young solo blast. Then, in the fourth Desmond Jennings hit a two-run double that put Tampa up by three. Then, in the ninth, Tampa put it out of reach with Yunel Escobar RBI base knock. Alex Cobb threw 6.2 scoreless innings for the Rays, scattering eight hits with five strikeouts. The Indians struggled offensively, stranding nine base runners. The Rays advance to take on the Boston Red Sox on Friday at 3.

Cincinnati Reds General Manager Walt Jocketty said the Reds do not plan on getting rid of manager Dusty Baker yesterday. Jocketty said the Reds have him under contract for another season after he signed an extension last year. The 64-year old coach has led the Reds to the playoffs in the three of the last four years, but the team has been eliminated in the first round every year.

The mid-season OHSAA football computer rankings came out with Athens coming atop Division 3, Region 9. The Bulldogs are just ahead of Chillicothe in their region and sit at 5-0. In Division 5, Region 17, Alexander comes in at 19th. The Spartans host Vinton County in our Athens County Game of the week on Friday night on Power 105. In Division 6, Region 21, Federal Hocking is 13th and Nelsonville-York is 16th. In Division 7, Region 25, Trimble comes in tied at number one with Shadyside. The top eight teams at the end of the season make the playoffs.

In NHL action yesterday, Colorado blasted Anaheim, 6-1. Detroit edged Buffalo, 2-1 and Toronto bested Philadelphia, 3-1.

In college football news, the Air Force-Navy and Army-Boston College football games will be played this weekend after receiving approval from the secretary of defense. With the government in shutdown, the games were questionable for this weekend. The Ohio Bobcats kick off MAC play on Saturday at Akron. Pre game coverage starts on Power 105 with the Bobcat Insider at 12:30 and kickoff is set for 2.
