The OHSAA released their latest AP State High School Football Poll yesterday. In Division III, Athens climbed one spot after a win over Wellston to fourth with two first place votes. The Bulldogs host Alexander on Friday night. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 7:15 and kickoff at 7:30. Also, in Division VII, Trimble remained fourth in the state with one first place vote after pitching their fifth shutout of the season last week. Ohio Bobcats junior safety Thad Ingol was named MAC East Defensive Player of the Week yesterday. Ingol was part of a Bobcat defense that held Akron to just 157 yards of total offense on Saturday. Ingol picked up his first incterception of the season and took it 34 yards to the endzone to give Ohio at 20-point lead and also scooped up a fumble and took it 18-yards for a touchdown in the game. The Bobcats are back in action on Saturday for Homecoming at Peden Stadium against Central Michigan. In MLB playoff action last night, Oakland took a 2-1 series lead with a 6-3 win over Detroit. St. Louis knotted up the series with Pittsburgh at two with a 2-1 win on the road. Tampa Bay stayed alive and cut the Boston series lead to 2-1 with 5-4 victory and the LA Dodgers advanced to the NLCS by edging out Atlanta, 4-3.
On Monday Night Football last night, the New York Jets outlasted the Atlanta Falcons, 30-28. Geno Smith was solid, throwing 16 of 20 for 199 yards and three touchdowns on the night while Matt Ryan tossed for 319 yards and two touchdowns.
In other NFL news, Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Desmond Bryant was back at practice on Monday after leaving Thursday’s game against Buffalo with shortness of breath. Bryant spent some time in the hospital and is currently being treated with medication. The Browns host Detroit on Sunday at 1.
In NHL play yesterday, the New York Rangers topped the LA Kings, 3-1 and Edmonton edged New Jersey, 5-4 in a shootout.
