The OHSAA released the latest football playoff rankings yesterday. In Division III, Athens came in ranked first in Region 9 after six weeks. The Bulldogs are in search of their third straight playoff appearance. In Division 5, Region 17, Alexander is 21st. The Spartans battle Athens on Friday on 970 WATH. In Division 6, Region 21, Federal Hocking is 14th with a 3-3 record and the Lancers battle Wahama on Friday on Power 105. In the same region, Nelsonville-York clocked in at 19th. Finally, in Divison 7, Region 25, Trimble came in second with a 6-0 record. The top eight teams in each region at the end of the year make the playoffs with the top four in each hosting a playoff game.
In NBA preseason action last night the Cleveland Cavaliers toppled the Milwaukee Bucks, 99-87. The Cavs dominated the first quarter, taking a 12-point lead and extending to 14 at the half. The Cleveland defense was strong, holding Milwaukee to just 37 percent shooting on the night and the Cavs outrebounded the Bucks, 50-38. Cleveland was led in scoring by Tristan Thompson who had 17 points and eight rebounds on the night. Andrew Bynum did not play in the game. Cleveland continues their preseason in Orlando on Friday.
In other NBA preseason play, Oklahoma City bested Philadelphia, 103-99. Brooklyn outlasted Washington, 111-106 in overtime. Atlanta edged Charlotte, 87-85. Utah handled Golden State, 101-78 and the LA Lakers ousted Denver, 90-88.
In MLB playoff action last night, Detroit tied the series with Oakland with an 8-6 win and Boston advanced to the ALCS with a 3-1 victory over Tampa Bay. Pittsburgh meets St. Louis in a decisive game five tonight at 8.
In NHL play yesterday, San Jose dominated the New York Rangers, 9-2. Vancouver edged New Jersey, 3-2 in overtime. Nashville clipped Minnesota, 3-2. Tampa Bay snuck past Buffalo, 3-2 in overtime. Pittsburgh blew past Carolina, 5-2. Philadelphia topped Florida, 2-1. The New York Islanders toppled Phoenix, 6-1 and Colorado defeated Toronto, 2-1.
