Morning Sports – 10/30/13

The OHSAA released their latest computer playoff rankings yesterday. In Division 3, Region 9, Athens came in at #2 and if the season ended today, the Bulldogs would host Dover in the first round. In Division 5, region 17, Alexander came in at #22. In Division 6, Region 21, Federal Hocking came in at #12 and Nelsonville-York was #15. Finally, in Division 7, Region 25, Trimble is #2 and if the season ended today the Tomcats would host Beallsville in the first round. The Athens County Game of the week features Nelsonville-York at Athens on Friday night.

Cincinnati Bengals defensive back Leon Hall was placed on the injured reserve list yesterday after suffering a season-ending Achilles injury on October 20 at Detroit. Hall played in five games this year for the Bengals and had 20 tackles with an interception. The Bengals take the field for Thursday Night Football tomorrow night as they head to Miami. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 7 and kickoff at 8:30.

Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips won his fourth Gold Glove award last night. Phillips won in 2011, 2010 and 2008.

The Ohio Bobcats basketball squad was tabbed to finish third in the MAC East by media in the preseason poll yesterday. The Bobcats are picked to finish behind Buffalo and Akron in the East. Ohio hosts their only scrimmage on Saturday at 2 against Ashland. The regular season opens next Saturday as Ohio hosts Northern Iowa. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game at 1:30 and tip off a 2. Meanwhile, Ohio women’s basketball was picked to finish fifth in the MAC East. The Lady Cats open their regular season next Sunday as they host Xavier at 2.

In NBA opening night action last night, the LA Lakers topped the LA Clippers, 116-103. Miami blew past Chicago, 107-95 and Indiana bested Orlando, 97-87. The Cleveland Cavaliers open their regular season tonight as they host the Brooklyn Nets at 7.

In NHL play yesterday, Phoenix topped the LA Kings, 3-1. Toronto blanked Edmonton, 4-0. St. Louis edged Winnipeg, 3-2. New Jersey clipped Tampa Bay, 2-1. Montreal ousted Dallas, 2-1. Chicago outlasted Ottawa, 6-5. Anaheim defeated Philadelphia, 3-2 and the New York Rangers topped the New York Islanders, 3-2.
