The Trimble Tomcats will make their first ever appearance in the state title after topping Berlin Center Western Reserve on Saturday night, 14-10. The Tomcats raced out to the early lead with a Justice Jenkins touchdown run on the opening drive. However, after a muffed punt the Blue Devils cut into the lead with a field goal. But once again Jenkins came through, rushing 16-yards to the house to give Trimble a 14-3 lead heading into the intermission.
The Tomcats advance to the state title game for the first time in school history.
Western Reserve scored on an Evan Nesbitt 33-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter to make the game close, but the Trimble defense would not budge again. Trimble shut down every drive the Blue Devils put together in the fourth, capped off by Austin Downs’ third interception of the night late in the game to seal it. The Mohawk Mafia held Western Reserve to just 130 yards of total offense. Blue Devils quarterback Nate Allison threw for just 35 yards with three interceptions.
Konner Standley led the Trimble offense with 22 carries for 96 yards and Jenkins chipped in with 88 yards on 15 carries.
Trimble is the first Athens County team to head to the state title since Nelsonville-York in 1981, when the Buckeyes took home the crown. The Tomcats advance to the first Division VII state title where they will meet defending Division VI champ Marion Local on Saturday at 7 at Massillon’s Paul Brown Tiger Stadium. The game can be heard on Power 105.
