Morning Sports – 12/18/13

The Athens Bulldogs topped Alexander last night, 58-40. The Spartans kept the game close most of the way, trailing by just six in the third quarter. However, the Bulldogs would catch fire, starting an 18-7 run to pull away behind Ibi Watson’s 24 points and 12 rebounds. Bulldog freshman Griffin Lutz also poured in 17 points while Alexander’s Seth Richardson led the Spartans with 14 points. Athens will now visit Vinton County on Friday night. The game can be heard on Power 105 and 970 WATH with pre game at 7:15 and tip at 7:30.

In other area boys high school hoops action last night, Chesapeake topped Meigs, 40-27. Wellston toppled Rock Hill, 67-41. Belpre edged Federal Hocking, 58-53 in double overtime and Miller bested Wahama, 61-57.

The Cleveland Cavaliers fell to the Portland Trailblazers last night, 119-116. The Cavs led by four at the half, but Portland came storming back in the third and led by eight with a minute to go. But Kyrie Irving caught fire, scoring six straight points and finding Anderson Varejao with seven seconds to go for a bucket that tied the game. However, Damien Lillard responded with a three-pointer to win the game for Portland. The Cavs will now host the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday night at 7:30.

Elsewhere in the NBA, Golden State bested New Orleans, 104-93. Oklahoma City toppled Denver, 105-93. The LA Lakers ousted Memphis, 96-92 and Charlotte defeated Sacramento, 95-87.

In NCAA college basketball top 25 play, #5 Michigan State dominated North Florida, 78-48. #6 Louisville handled Missouri State, 90-60. #7 Oklahoma State blew past Delaware State, 75-43. #11 Wichita State outlasted Alabama, 72-67. #13 Oregon blew past UCI, 91-63 and #16 Florida snuck past #15 Memphis, 77-75.

The Ohio Bobcats return to action tonight as they welcome 22nd ranked UMass. The Bobcats are off to a strong 7-2 start to the season, but will face their toughest challenge in the undefeated and nationally ranked Minutemen. The game can be heard on Power 105 tonight with pre game at 6:30 and the tip at 7.
