Morning Sports – 1/2/14

The Cleveland Browns are reportedly interested in not only Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as their new head coach, but also Auburn coach Gus Malzahn and Vanderbilt coach James Franklin. The Browns are also expected to hire recently fired Lions coach Jim Schwartz as their defensive coordinator. The Browns are also set to interview Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. In other NFL news, Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has declared for the draft. The Cincinnati Bengals open the playoffs hosting the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 11:30 and the kick off at 1.

The Cleveland Cavaliers were able to breathe a sigh of relief yesterday as Kyrie Irving’s MRI on an injured knee came back showing only a contusion. The injury makes Irving questionable for tonight’s game against Orlando, but the star guard will be day-to-day. Irving fell awkwardly and had to helped off the floor in the third quarter of a loss to Indiana on Tuesday, but was able to return and play in the fourth. The Cavs battle the Magic tonight at 7.

In NBA play last night, Dallas bested Washington, 87-78 and Toronto handled Indiana,

Ohio State defensive end Noah Spence has been suspended three games, starting with Friday’s Orange Bowl against Clemson for violating an unspecified Big Ten rule. The Buckeyes say that Spence does not agree with the suspension, but appeals did not come through. Spence didn’t travel with the team to Florida after finishing the season with eight sacks and 14 tackles for a loss and was named to the all-Big Ten team.

In college football bowl action last night, North Texas blasted UNLV, 36-14 in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. Nebraska upset #22 Georgia, 24-19 in the Gator Bowl. #9 South Carolina topped #19 Wisconsin, 34-24 in the Capital One Bowl. #16 LSU outlasted Iowa, 21-14 in the Outback Bowl and #4 Michigan State edged #5 Stanford in the Rose Bowl, 24-20.

The Columbus Blue Jackets return to action tonight as they travel to Phoenix. The Jackets are 5-4-1 in their last ten and this matchup is crucial in a four-game stretch against teams competing for playoff positioning with the Blue Jackets. In other Jackets news forward Matt Calvert was placed on injured reserve yesterday with an injured shoulder. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 8:45 and drop of the puck at 9.
