Morning Sports Report – 1/29/14

The Federal Hocking Lancers fell to the Southern Tornadoes in last night’s Athens County Game of the Week, 59-52. The Lancers and Tornadoes traded buckets at a rapid pace in the first quarter, but in the second, the Tornadoes took control of the offensive glass and held a nine-point advantage at the break. In the second half, Federal Hocking came storming back, cutting the lead to as low as two and the Lancers had opportunities in the final seconds, but could not convert. Federal Hocking was led by Delbert Crum with 17 points. Our next Athens County Game of the Week features Nelsonville-York at Alexander on Friday night. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game at 7:15 and tip at 7:30.

The Columbus Blue Jackets lost their third straight last night, 3-2 to the Ottawa Senators. The Senators jumped out to the early advantage on a power play goal in the first. Ottawa added to their lead early in the second, but Columbus responded on a Cam Atkinson power play goal. In the third, James Wisniewski tied the game on another power play goal but Jason Spezza came through late in the game for Ottawa to steal the win. The Jackets will now host Washington on Thursday night. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 6:45 and drop of the puck at 7.

Elsewhere in the NHL, Phoenix blanked the LA Kings, 3-0. Nashville edged Winnipeg, 4-3. St. Louis shutout New Jersey, 3-0. Washington snuck past Buffalo, 5-4 in overtime. Montreal handled Carolina, 3-0. Philadelphia dominated Detroit, 5-0. Toronto clipped Tampa Bay, 3-2 and Boston blew past Florida, 6-2.

The Cleveland Cavaliers fell to the New Orleans Pelicans last night, 100-89. The Cavs led by three after one, but were dominated in the second and third periods as they were outscored by 21 points. Cleveland attempted a comeback in the fourth, but could never get close enough. Anthony Davis had 8 blocks in the game for New Orleans and the Cavs were led by Kyrie Irving with 23 points and five assists.

In other NBA action, Houston topped San Antonio, 97-90. New York toppled Boston, 114-88 and Detroit handled Orlando, 103-87.

The Ohio Bobcats return to action tonight as they host the Central Michigan Chippewas. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game coverage starting at 6 with the Bobcat Insider and the tip at 7.

In NCAA top 25 play yesterday, #4 Wichita State topped Loyola, 57-45. #7 Michigan State outlasted #15 Iowa, 71-69 in overtime. LSU upset #11 Kentucky, 87-82 and #20 Creighton ousted St. John’s, 63-60.
