Ohio women’s basketball fell to the Bowling Green Falcons last night, 78-62. Ohio trailed by 10 early in the game, but Ohio finished the first half on a 35-21 run to lead by four at the break. Ohio stayed in front for the majority of the second half and led by seven with nine minutes left, but the Falcons came storming back, dominating the game over the final five minutes. Ohio was led by Kiyanna Black with 12 points. The Lady Cats are back in action on Sunday at Central Michigan at 2.
In area boys hoops action last night, Southern edged Trimble, 57-52. The Tomcats were led by Micah Couch with 24 points. Also, South Gallia bested Belpre, 55-45.
In area girls high school hoops, Athens moved to 19-0 with a 50-39 win over Wellston. Alexander bested Meigs, 43-34. Vinton County topped Nelsonville-York, 68-53 and Eastern defeated Federal Hocking, 81-26.
The Athens County Game of the Week returns to Power 105 tonight as Nelsonville-York visits county rival Alexander. The Buckeyes and Spartans are neck and neck in the middle of the TVC-Ohio standings as the two rivals meet in Albany tonight. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game at 7:15 and the tip at 7:30.
The Athens Bulldogs are back in action tonight as they host the Vinton County Vikings. The Bulldogs sit a game a head of the Vikings in the TVC-Ohio standings and hold a perfect conference record including a win over Vinton County. The game becomes a possible TVC-Ohio title game in Athens tonight on 970 WATH with pre game at 7:15 and tip at 7:30.
The Columbus Blue Jackets blew past the Washington Capitals last night, 5-2. The Jackets jumped out to the early advantage with goals from Derek MacKenzie and Ryan Johansen in the first period. Columbus pushed the lead to four with a tally from Brandon Dubinsky and a second from Ryan Johansen in the second. Washington got on the board late in the second, but the Jackets put it out of reach with a Cam Atkinson lamplighter in the third. Columbus will now host the Florida Panthers on Saturday. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 6:45 and drop of the puck at 7.
The Cleveland Cavaliers were dominated by the New York Knicks last night, 117-86. The Knicks poured in 38 points in the first quarter and led by 17 and pushed the lead out to 24 at the break. The Knicks shot 56 percent from the field and 46 percent from deep. Cleveland was led by Kyrie Irving with 24 points and six rebounds. Cleveland will now head to Houston on Saturday at 8.
Elsewhere in the NBA last night, Golden State toppled the LA Clippers, 111-92 and Phoenix bested Indiana, 102-94.
