The Cleveland Indians and outfielder Michael Brantley reached a deal yesterday for a four-year, $25 million contract with an $11 million club option for a fifth year. The 26-year old Brantley hit .284 with 10 homers and 73 RBIs last season. Brantley has spent the past five seasons in Cleveland. The Indians are also in talks with ace Justin Masterson for a possible contract extension. Indians pitchers and catchers report to Goodyear, Arizona today while Cincinnati Reds pitchers and catchers report on Friday.
In NBA action last night, Golden State dominated Philadelphia, 123-80. Houston toppled Minnesota, 107-89. Boston blew past Milwaukee, 102-86. Detroit ousted San Antonio, 109-100. Toronto bested New Orleans, 108-101 and Indiana defeated Denver, 119-80.
In NCAA top 25 action, Kansas State knocked off #7 Kansas, 85-82 in overtime. West Virginia dominated #11 Iowa State, 102-77 and #17 Virginia bested Maryland, 61-53.
The Athens Bulldogs return to action tonight as they make a trip to Albany to battle the rival Alexander Spartans. The Bulldogs are a win away from clinching a TVC-Ohio crown for a second-straight season. Meanwhile, the young and upstart Spartans led by guard Jordan Moseley have upset on their minds in the Alley. The Bulldogs and Spartans clash on 970 WATH tonight with pre game at 7:15 and the tip at 7:30.
In other area boys hoops action tonight, Vinton County hosts Gallia Academy. Trimble welcomes Eastern. Belpre visits Wahama and Southern is at Miller.
