The Trimble Tomcats took home their first sectional title since 2005 last night with a 73-66 win over the Waterford Wildcats. The Tomcats and Wildcats went back and forth in the first quarter, but in the second, Trimble raced out to an 11-point lead led by Jacob Koons’ four first half treys. However, Waterford ended the half on an 8-0 run and then jumped on top by five heading into the final period. Trimble went on a 14-0 run in the last frame and eventually pulled away. Micah Couch led the Tomcats with 26 points and 11 boards. Trimble will now play top-seeded Peebles in the Convo in a district semifinal next Tuesday night at 6:15 on Power 105.
In other boys playoff action last night, Southern fell to South Webster, 65-54.
The Athens Lady Bulldogs look to defend their district title tonight against the Jackson Ironladies at Southeastern HS. The Lady Dogs topped Jackson in the title game last season and will face a rematch this year. The game can be heard on 970 WATH with pre game at 6:45 and tip at 7.
The Cleveland Cavaliers fell to the Toronto Raptors last night, 99-93. The Cavs trailed by six at the break, but jumped out to a one-point advantage heading into the final period. However, Toronto came right back led by Demar DeRozan, who scored 16 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter. Kyrie Irving led the Cavs with 25 points and 9 assists. Cleveland is at Oklahoma City tonight at 8.
Elsewhere in the NBA, Houston blew past Sacramento, 129-103. Minnesota bested Phoenix, 110-101. Portland topped Denver, 100-95. Chicago ousted Atlanta, 107-103. Washington handled Orlando, 115-106 and Indiana dominated the LA Lakers, 118-98.
In NCAA top 25 action last night, #1 Florida edged Vanderbilt, 57-54. #2 Wichita State blew past Bradley, 69-49. #6 Duke handled Virginia Tech, 66-48. #13 San Diego State blew past San Jose State, 90-64. #14 Wisconsin defeated Indiana, 69-58. Minnesota upset #20 Iowa, 95-89 and #25 New Mexico outlasted Utah State, 67-58.
Ohio basketball returns to action tonight for a critical home matchup with Buffalo with first place in the MAC East on the line. The Bobcats are coming off a dominating win over Akron over the weekend and will look for a season sweep of the Bulls. The game can be heard on Power 105 with pre game at 6 with the Bobcat Insider and the tip at 7.
